DevTeam has finally released Redsn0w, the multiplatform jailbreaking, Unlocking for iPhone 2G, and iPhone 3G. It is very easy to use. Please note that this does not apply to iPhone 3G S.
For iPhone 3GS Unlock with Untrasn0w here and Jailbreak here.
If you want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use ‘PwnageTool’ on Mac OS X.
Before you start. Checklist:
1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
2. Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).
Steps to Jailbreak, Unlock, Activate:
1. To use redsn0w v0.72 simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!) Official Links:
i. Make sure your iPhone is both turned off and connected to the computer. Hold down the Hold (top left corner) button until the ‘Slide to power off’ message appears, and then slide the button to turn off the device
ii. Hold down the Power button (top left corner) button for 3 seconds…
iii. WITHOUT releasing the POWER button, also hold down the Home (bottom center) button for 10 seconds…
iv. WITHOUT releasing the HOME button, release the Power button. Keep holding the Home button for 30 seconds…
DFU MODE SUCCESSFUL
Now Redsn0w should successfully terminate and iPhone will continue the process and Reboot. 🙂

Taranfx..maybe you could help me. I don’t seem to be getting any help on the Dev Team site. I tried to use Redsn0w earlier today and my phone stayed in the white screen and Redsn0w said “waiting for phone to reboot” and when the phone finally did reboot the program never recognized it. The phone ended up showing the usb cable connecting to iTunes. As for my service it said I have service with Tmobile and I received a new voicemail alert but it is stuck in emergency call mode.
I tried to do a restore but I received a 1601 error from iTunes. I have continued to try and figure Redsn0w out but to much distress I have yet to get my phone working properly again.
ANY help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

the problem 1601 is about getting stuck in DFU mode.
Possibly your PC didnt recognize the USB and it never was detected by redsn0w to proceed.
solution:
Compeltely remove and install iTunes 8.2 and try the same steps again, it shud work.

NO, Redsn0w will work for iphone 3g for people who havent used yellowsn0w in the past. Since u were using hardware unlock, redsn0w shud work for u (wen hardware is removed)

Hi Taranfx, I think I have got an unusual problem. I’ve got a 2g upgraded to 3.0 with Redsn0w. It works and is unlocked but for the last couple of months (mostly on 2.2.1 before upgrade) I’ve been having problems with it losing connection to cellphone network. Connection will drop and then it will try searching for ages before giving up. Then if you sleep and wake it will sometimes come back full strength. It is in a spot where I know it should be getting full strength signal all the time.
My gut feeling is that it is the baseband firmware which is causing problems. I can’t find any other reports out there of similar thing. If I’m right how do I get the modem firmware off 04.05.04G?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You are the first person who faced similar problems as I did on 2.2.
It’s weired and defintely a bug with baseband 04.05.04G, since I’m also using the same.
From what I Observed over years, this happened for me after long duration calls when phone heated up.
Definitely, there is no solution
Since I migrated to 3.0, it’s been a bit better, none till now. (for last 20 days)

i have an iphone 2g never unlocked updated to 3.0 firmware…i want to jailbreak it and unlock it for the first time using redsn0w, i went through the steps and created the .ipsw file using itunes 8.2 now and tried option restore to the jailbroken ipsw file and it wouldn’t restore it would extract software then give me a 1604 error code…i was able to restore back to original 3.0 but no jailbreak can you tell me what im doing wrong?

I see that ZiPhone claims to be able to erase it but I’m not sure whether that means that I should erase and re-install or what?

@Noraa, alot of softwares can change your baseband. A baseband is responsible for basic mobile Radio and functionalities which are independent of iPhone OS.
There is no latest unlockable baseband than this one. I’m afraid, u have to stay with it.

did you try another sim card. Sometimes a particular baseband doesn’t go well with the carrier frequency all of a sudden.
Try downgrading the baseband (check in some old forum) and firmware to something like 1.1.4 (1.1.4 was the most stable) and then upgrade back.

Hi, I made de jailbreak with the redsn0w and now I don’t have signal and my phone does not connect using wireless. I have tried many and many routers and I’m always receive the message “unable to join XXX network”.
Does anyone knows whats going on ?
PS: My friend’s iphone does connect to these wireless routers normally.

Troubleshooting steps:
First thing to try is “reset network settings”. in settings > Network.
2nd: Are those wireless networks WPA2 enabled? Try changing one of them to unsecured and connect, if tht doesnt work (it shud work)
3rd: check if tht router has some MAC binding.
If both of them are disabled, try rebooting, iPhone should connect.

hey dudz i tried to download and install 3.0 os from itunes and it keep saying no internet connection ,although the connection is on, anyway i found a 3.0 custom ipsw that i restored to my iphone ( 2.2 os) from itunes a several steps one then the phone stops in emergency call only and an icon of a cable and itunes above it shows so what to do anyone ?? thanks i will be waiting for your help

The correct way is to update to 3.0 using original iTunes firmware. Even if u use custom firmware, it shud b fine as long as u are updating not restoring. Though restoring and then redsn0w works, but in some cases, it fails. Recommended to update through iTunes to 3.0 then redsn0w it!

I can’t work out what has changed except that the battery ran right down and since it was recharged it has been fine. I restarted the thing a few times before that though and it didn’t fix it.

I have upgrades my 2g phone to os3.0 via itunes. I would like to know that if I jailbreak using Redsn0w, will I lose app store capability to purchase songs and apps from Itunes.
I am a O2 user so only reason to jailbreak is to load google maps on my iphone offline.

I am having the same problem as Sumeet was having. after the upgrade (using Redsnow), my phone (iphone 2G) battery doesnt last more than 18 hrs even if i dont even touch it. i dont get calls most of the time.
you had replied about trying to Downgrade the Baseband. I dont know what a baseband is and how to downgrade.
i tried Downgrading the firmware back to 2.2.1 and 2.2 like a 100 times but m getting the same 2 errors, Error no: 1600 or Error No: 20

Hi,
i read in one of you blogs that 1600 error is cause the Iphone was not in DFU Mode.
so i wanted to clear some doubts to get the phone into DFU mode.
before i start the procedure, the phone should be switched off (by pressing the TOP RIGHT BUTTON, you said top left but i have the headphone jack in top left part)
The phone should be connected to the computer (Should ITunes be On?)
1. when i press the power button for 3 seconds i see the apple symbol after 1 and half second, is this ok?
2nd. when i press the home button without leaving the power button the screen goes Black again after 4-5 seconds but i still keep holding both buttons for complete 10 seconds.
3rd. after 10 seconds i am supposed to let go of th power button and keep holding the home button for 30 seconds.
(if i keep the itunes on. it detects Iphone after 15-20 seconds, If i dont keep the itunes on. Nothing happens)
after itunes detects the iphone it tells me that the phone is in Recovery mode. (is it supposed to say DFU mode?)
after pressing Ok. i press the Restore button while holding the Shift key. and provided os 2.2. After a while i get error 1600.
please please please please help me!!! :'(

Do u get signal with other phones using same sim ?
If there is a difference, this problem is to do with hardware rather than firmware or baseband.
If yes, probably your antenna is not working. In iPhone 2g, antenna is located under that black plastic covering.
Probably if u got it repaired or opened it, u could have broken the antenna wire. which is white in color.
There are two antenna wires located inside, one for cell, otehr for wifi.
Get it checked.

Which map software are u using?
If you are talking abt the inbuilt google maps, don’t rely on the cache it holds. a bit better approach is to install “offline maps” (only for jailbroken).
Best option is to use xGPS (jailbroken only).
It let’s u download complete city map and transfer them to iphone wirelessly.
Ofcourse its 2g, u dont have GPS but it will serve offline maps pretty gracefully.

this could be because of a background application that is eating ur Processor and hence ur battery. If u r familiar with unix, use “top” in terminal to see what process is it.
else u can remove all applications u might have installed via cydia. Certain cydia apps like “stacks”, etc cause high CPU usage.

@Tananfx, I have tried it last night with no success. The jailbreak worked fine ( Redsn0w 7.1 and 7.2 ), but after two or three hours, SMS lag started, followed by a block of all incoming calls.
Then, I put the sim card at another mobile phone device (not iphone), and everything worked properly.
I came into contact with Vodafone and they told me that
1) Similar problems have been noticed in some iphones
2) They send these devices to Apple in order to fix them
I believe that the problem has to do with the 3.0 because jailbreaked 2.2.1 worked fine with no problems!

Regarding ur problem of incoming calls i had the same problem for my phone and after a bit of research got this solution which is ridiculously easy and silly and will most definitely work for you. So goto ur SETTINGS>MAIL,CONTACTS,CALENDARS>FETCH NEW DATA(click on this one) then switch off the PUSH button which is probably ON for u at the moment> then scroll down and click on advanced and change everything(ur email addresses) from Push to FETCH.
Should do the trick for you mate. Good luck and do lemme know if ur problem is solved

I have an iphone 2G with 3.0.1 I used redsnow 0.7 and 0.72 to unlock and jailbreak but now I don’t get any incoming calls. well I got one. out of say 30 or more. the phone also doesn’t say 30 missed calls, or add them to missed calls list. If they leave a message the red dot comes on. This is a simm from t-mobile that works perfectly in every other phone. …HELP…. (I tried the turn all to fetch instead of push and it didn’t seem to make any difference at all.) I also tried redsnow 0.8 but it just stops when it gets to the hold down buttons part. on a MAC.

I found it!!!!! I did not have any data network selected for my phone so it was constantly looking for one. I discovered that when the E was gone it got calls, but ONLY then. http://www.unlockit.co.nz/ puts fake info in the correct fields so your phone thinks it good to go and stops looking. My 2G is now happily receiving all calls and I’m thrilled.
