Microsoft feels the Heat, Blasts over Google Chrome Frame Plugin

Few days back, Google had released Chrome plugin for IE that promises to boost IE speed and give the latest features like HTML 5. Seriously, Microsoft today felt the heat and warned Internet Explorer users that they could double their security vulnerabilities if they installed and used Google Chrome Frame.

Well said Microsoft, but can you list down those vulnerabilities. Or shall I list the 10x times more critical issues with IE ?

Here is what Microsoft’s representative has to say about this:

“It’s not necessarily that plug-ins aren’t or can’t be secure, but that running a browser within a browser doubles the potential attack surface in a way that we don’t see is particularly helpful,” said Amy Bazdukas, Microsoft’s general manager for IE.

He said that by running Chrome Frame, Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) users were unwittingly discarding all the private browsing protections that Microsoft built into its newest browser. Really? uhmmm

“Chrome Frame breaks the privacy model of IE,” she claimed. “Users are not going to be able to use IE’s privacy features, something that’s not made apparent to users. They’re essentially circumvented.”

Bazdukas also mentioned that IE8’s browser history deletion feature is crippled by Chrome Frame.

In a statement earlier today, Microsoft said using Chrome Frame is not “a risk we would recommend our friends and families take.” Bazdukas, however, got more specific.

“We’re not saying that there’s a specific security vulnerability in Chrome Frame, but the concern that plug-ins in general have had regarding security issues adds a new potential threat when Chrome Frame is used. Users have told us that they’re looking for a better and safer browser, and we can’t see how [using Chrome Frame] will deliver that.”

Practically speaking, if users had been demanding this since years, and Microsoft is doing it right, why are they still 2nd most unsecured browser?

The Fact is Chrome Frame runs JavaScript nearly 10 times faster than does IE8 on its own.

The extra speed and HTML 5 support are necessary, said Google, if IE users are to run advanced Web applications such as Google Wave .

Someone is jealous.

  1. what can I say – if I want google chrome – I will go to google and download it. it I want to use IE – I will use IE. period.
but there is no excuse for some lame web developer, who is too lazy or too stupid to spend a few minutes to make his website to work in IE. and even more is to cover this by making me (end user) to install some third party plugin to watch his site! I will close this site immediately and never visit it again. it's even worse than site full in flash, because some things really can't be done with JS+CSS but every, I mean EVERY feature with fancy CSS3 etc can be gracefully degraded to use with IE.

  3. Hi friends. I have been a software and hardware developer for some 30+ years. I was writing Cobol and Fortran when I was 12..with that said I learn everyday…but here's the rub. Chevrolet is never going to allow Ford to build an engine for their cars and trucks…Microsoft owns the platform and will never allow anyone to build a better browser..The plugin has to be approve by Microsoft anyway…you cant build an engine for my car if I dont want you too..

Google Chrome is nice but it is faster because it doesnt check as many security features as IE8 before letting you get hung out to dry…Hooray for others working on a better way…We should all be grateful to Microsoft for carrying us this far…Yea I admit MS is a handful but drill it down and they have produced more ways for our lives to be more productive than any one company other than Gerber and Wal-Mart. My 2 cents and its from experience. If everyone would get saavy we could use Linux more and more. But, we get what we pay for..
