Bypass Torrent Throttling, Shaping, Blocking

In US, unlimited 3G mobile data plans are becoming things of the past, but atleast for now, our DSLs, Fiber, Cable data plans are unlimited.

In 100s of countries, Internet service providers Throttle Bittorrent Traffic by either blocking, Shaping them in various manners just to save their a** from bandwidth hogs by preserving P2P bandwidths. Some of the popular ISPs that employ bandwidth throttling are: Rogers in Canda, BellSouth, Comcast in US, BT in UK, Spectranet in India, and 100s others. Net-Neutrality is out birth right, ISPs can’t just undo this.

How To Bypass BitTorrent Throttling, Shaping

There are around 10 ways to do it, but here are the best ones

Method 1. Encryption

This doesn’t work with everyone, but is worth giving a try.

Goto your BitTorrent client settings,  (I am assuming uTorrent) and enable Transport Encryption:

Try first with “enabled”, if that doesnt work, switch over to “forced”, if that doesn’t work either, uncheck “allow incoming legacy connections”. It should work.

Note: Certain ISPs use Port filtering based on ports, in those cases this should work. But smarter ISPs do use Intelligent Packet Filtering, in those cases, youneed to switch to method 2.

Also, encrypting network traffic would slow down torrent transfers by significant figure, due to  obvious overheads and incompatibilites with other peers.

Method 2: BitTorrent over HTTP with Thunder Mod

The solution is simple, if you cant beat it, bypass it. No ISP would throttle HTTP traffic, and hence this method is invincible for 99.9% ISPs (I haven’t see any ISP bypassing this)

Download and Unzip Thunder Mod (aka Xunlei, credits hehehunter) and make it your default BitTorrent client. That’s all you need to do. With default settings, it uses TCP port 80 fora ll your Torrent, HTTP, eDonkey downloads. Your torrents will not just no longer be throttled, but also way faster than it used to be over Random TCP/UDP ports.

Try it out, I’m sure you would love it.

  1. To test for blocked UDP or TCP ports, use http://www.firebind.com

It can test to see whether any of the 65535 TCP or UDP ports are blocked in the outbound direction from client to Internet. It uses a Java client to send packets back and forth to the Firebind server on the Internet. If the data transfers successfully, then the port isn't blocked. It's the only web-based service that can test any port.

  3. Then try the most common ports available, or setup an outside proxy that allows encryption of email ports, set both the client bittorrent, and proxy on both ports …. hehehehehe

  4. 2012 Nov 4 — Just downloaded and using ThunderMOD right now. Yes, it does work. My ISP ExplorNet VIGOROUSLY throttles BT down to even 1 kbps but always below 60 kbps. Now I am getting 1500+ kbps and my torrent will be done in 36 min instead of 4w 25d. I’m not sure about how safe this new program is though.
