We reported earlier that Android 2.1 screenshots got leaked for HTC Hero, and now we get the ROM available in the wild.

Update: Android 2.1 for Droid is available

Now you can Install leaked  Android 2.1 on your Android Phone. This update includes a new Sense UI. So give your Android Phone a new look. Also try Android 2.0 on Windows here if you want to take a look at Android OS.

Installation instructions are pretty simple and straight forward, and it involves the following steps.

Step 1: Do a Backup with Nandroid.

Step 2: Flash the new radio version 63.18.55.06HU_6.35.07.25 (download)

Step 3: Perform a wipe, Flash it.

I tryed it, but the screen was empty after install. Programs like calendar, clock, camera etc. was not on the phone when install was finish.
So I had to restore my backup to get all to normal.

    Is it offical?
  • cassidyjames
Nope, the official release will come mid-March from HTC.

So it does not work with Sprint Hero? Is there any good changes?
  • cassidyjames
NO. It'll brick it if you try. HTC has said they're coming out with an Android 2.1 update for the Hero mid-March, so I'd wait until then.

Thanks for helping me BRICK my Hero. You should really specify that this is for the GSM and NOT THE CDMA Hero. Thanks.
  • case
Lols. Should've checked first then shouldn't you?
Although I would have assumed it was the GSM version otherwise they would say 'Sprint Hero'

It's all good... I was stupid not to check, but it's always good to specify in the directions when posting something that CAN brick a phone. Luckily I I have the equipment protection plan and the people at the Sprint store were really helpful (so long as I played dumb and told them it "Just won't turn on").
