How to Install Snow Leopard [VMWare]

If you wish to install Snow Leopard on a Windows box under VMWare Workstation 7, here’s a quick guide.

Pre-requisites:

Need to install Snow Leopard Natively?

Step-by-step guide:

Step 1. Open the .vmdk file and Edit virtual machine settings. Adjust RAM, Graphics, CPU settings to your preferred values. I recommend 1GB and above RAM if you  have physical RAM > 2.5GB. For the Graphics keep it somewhere above 50 mb to get QE/CI on Snow Leopard. And for the processor, use as many cores as possible.

Step 2. Set your CD/DVD location to ISO image Darwin_Snow.iso

Step 3. Now Run the virtual machine and hit F8 quickly. You`ll get boot options as shown below:

Boot Menu
c: Boot DVD
h: Boot First Hard Drive
e: Eject DVD

Your choice:

Step 4. Before continuing, you need to swap your CD image with Snow Leopard ISO/DVD. To do this, right click on the CD icon in toolbar in the bottom right and click settings. Now located your DVD drive or set the ISO image.

Step 5. Return to the boot menu that appeared in Step 3 and hit c for “boot DVD”. Press F8 again for advanced options on Snow Leopard installer. On the boot loader enter “-v” and Enter to start installation in verbose mode.

Step 6. It would be couple of minutes before you see the main installer User Interface. Install Snow Leopard the usual way by creating Mac OS Journaled partition and de-selecting few un-needed drivers, other stuff under the customization tab. You should finish up booting into Snow LEopard without any issues.

If you face any issues, it’s easy to geta  hold of it by contacting me on Twitter @Taranfx or leave a comment below.

Post Install:

Fixing Sound:

Take a VMWare snapshot, then Mount the darwin_snow.iso as the virtual drive. We will now attempt to make Graphics and sound to work properly. “Install VMware Tools” and Reboot. You should boot up all fine with better graphics and resolution.

Now we will attempt Installing Sound card drivers. Take a snapshot of the VM. Run the pkg EnsoniqAudioPCI.mpkg, choose both options, reboot.

Fixing Video Resolution:

  1. Edit the boot.plist file to anywhere and edit it. /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist
  2. Edit boot.plist and Reboot
<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>1280×1024x32</string>

You can specify any resolution above.

Note: if you have problems editing the boot.plist, edit via command line with root permissions.

After the Reboot, you should be able to see the new resoltion in Place. If you wish to enable full Graphics acceleration (QE/CI), Install EFI and then change the following parameter in boot.plist:

<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>y</string>

IMPORTANT: You will always need to use the darwin_snow.iso to boot your VM. So keep it configured under CD/DVD

Once everything is done, you can use the VMWare image to run under VMWare player, free of cost.

Everything should be all smooth, in case you need help or assistance Twitter @Taranfx is your PoC.

Big problem, the machine does not shut down. I shuts down to some window, but doesn't shut down all the way, I have to hit the red power down in vmware to shut down the machine. I just tried to put maintenance on, the mac logged out and put all hte maintenance on, then went to restart. But it can't restart. It always shuts down to some window, and never shuts down clean.

Result: I cannot even boot the machine now.

HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR VM (MAC) SHUT DOWN ALL THE WAY IN VMWARE 7.1? I HAVE AN INTEL I7 CORE 980X 6 CORE PROCESSOR.

WHY WON'T THE MAC SHUT ALL THE WAY DOWN? I CAN'T RUN A MAC UNDER A VM THAT I CANNOT PUT FIXES AND UPDATES ON. IT'S WORTHLESS.

I WOULD APPRECIATE KNOWING HOW TO SHUT DOWN ALL THE WAY JUST LIKE WINDOWS XP AND LINUX DOES. THIS THING DOES NOT.

OK so, I have already installed snow leopard on my dell laptop and ideneb on my dell computer. Both i am encountering the same problem, I can't seem to boot the snow leopard or ideneb.
Here's a recap: (i'll use snow leopard as my example)
    1. I installed the snow leopard (patched) on my dell laptop.
    2. After installing, it tells me to restart my computer and then it starts to count down from 30 seconds.
    3. So i restart it, but when i restart it, I can't find my OS there, just windows 7.
So i know there is a step i am missing that allows me to boot into the snow leopard but i don't know what that step is so please HELP!!!!
(I already went through tutorials and youtube tutorials, but all the tutorials just tell me how to install snow leopard not how to set up dual-booting) so help me if i missed something
  • Mac on PC?? WHAAT?? O.O
In case you might be dual booting, you might want to use a program called EasyBCD2. Google it and download. What this does is add a new entry to your boot menu, whereas allowing you to add either Linux, Windows XP, or even Mac OSX Leopard! Once you add Mac OSX to your boot menu, restart your comp and you will see an option to boot either your Mac partition or Windows 7. Hope this helped! :) If you have more questions, please feel free to ask! ^^

You have to chge or add the value smc.present = "TRUE" to smc.present = "FALSE" in the vmx file then your vm will shut down correctly.

    2nd
I have the same problem as mikef74, i cannot view pictures with the preview app and iwork and ilive also did not work correctly.
vmware tools installed and the graphics driver for SnowLeopard on vmware from here :http://sourceforge.net/projects/vmsvga2/files/ too.
    Any help?
  • corben2005
You have to add or change the value of smc.present = "TRUE" to smc.present = "FALSE" The your VM will correctly shut down.

    2nd:
I have the same problem as you and mikef74 I can not view pictures with the app Preview and Pages iLife does not work correctly.
  • mikef74
I have the same problem. Cannot view pictures using PREVIEW. Cannot watch any video in iTunes (yet can watch videos on YouTube and in the quicktime player without any issues).

Also, I cannot run most of the built-in screensavers.
  • AMing
The problem should be caused by QE/CI is not enabled. The preview and full screen will not work.
  • KrysaLee
I can only get as far as step six. Right before the main installer loads, I get a message saying "Invalid Front Side Bus Frequency 66000000Hz. Disabling the CPU."

    How do I fix this?

So how exactly do you do the following?

    //
If you wish to enable full Graphics acceleration (QE/CI), Install EFI and then change the following parameter in boot.plist:

    <key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
    <string>y</string>
    //

Has anyone gotten that to work inside VMWare?

Everything else I'm finding online is telling me that it is impossible to enable QE/CI inside a VMWare workstation.
  • insaner
    Couple of quick questions.

Is there any way to keep the VMWare Shared Folders alias from being recreated everytime I boot into the virutal machine?

Also for whatever reason it appears to ignore the fact that I've set the screensaver to Never. Screensaver will pop on after about 20 minutes.

    OK Guys, Installed EFI and

    Edited /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist to

    <key>GraphicsEnabler</key>

and rebooted, but still from Apple menu==> More info, under graphics it shows

It means that QE/CI not enabled, i am getting full resolution as I have installed VMware tools and also Vmware Fusion 3.0, but when opening video or scroll the mouse, it is so slow and flickering, and shocking.

ALTHOUGH IN VIRTUAL MACHNE SETTINGS, I SELECTED ACCELERATE 3D, BUT DID NOT Help at all.

    Same issue here.
I also noticed that opening a jpeg in preview show an empty gray image:

    07/03/10 09.46.46 Preview[3681] invalid pixel format
    07/03/10 09.46.46 Preview[3681] invalid context

This is the same error i got trying using iphoto 09.
Also trying to get some info using glxinfo i got an error.

    snow:~ admin$ glxinfo | grep 'direct rendering'

does any of you face this issue?
I read that reinstalling the latest update can solve this issue but I think that it could be related to missing QE-CI support.

I cannot view jpeg files in the preview app. Along the same lines, I cannot watch videos in iTunes.

    EFI qe/CI Question:

I have no clue how to install EFI. I input the graphics enable string without it and I got options for resolutions etc but still no qe/ci support.
I downloaded PC EFI but have no clue how to install it/if it will actually help.
Any input (*maybe a guide to installing EFI and getting QE running) would be greatly appreciated!

Also, VRAM? The virtual machine says it has 128VRAM, but programs aren’t detecting it.

ditto, great tutorial! All working except QE/CI. However, I do have the same issue/question as sporkintosh. My confusion is how to get efi detected? Great Write UP ! Quick Question though, i can't seem to apply 10.6.2 update as it gives error that this update cannot be installed on drive. I have checked to make sure hard disk(vm) has plenty of space and all other factors. I think update checks hardware and being vmware,it rejects to install. Do you have any fix for that ?
  • I had no problems updating to 10.6.2. Can you gimme the "exact" error message? The update doesnt check hardware, it should be unrelated.

Few reported post installation, keyboard, mouse becomes unresponsive.. Here's what can be done:

I found a sort of fix for those of you that updated to 10.6.2 and find that the keyboard/mouse takes longer to start responding in the guest Snow Leopard.

When Snow Leopard loads into the desktop, press Ctrl+Shift, and either from VM>Removable Devices or the bar along the bottom of the window, disconnect the Universal USB input, and it will disconnect your keyboard and mouse, and reconnect it immediately and become responsive.
  • Olivierc
Why is VMWare still telling me:

You should eject this CD and insert an OS X disc.
Do you want to continue booting this CD (probably won’t work)?

How to get rid of this ???

I get this after having switched DVD.. so first the Snowy_Darwin. Once F8 and the boot loader I switch DVD, connect it, wait a little while ( like 5 sec) and press C..

    What's wrong?

In VMware the cpu is being disabled by the guest OS when Darwin is loading with 4 different patched images. Booting from dos with the same patched ISO's, once Darwin is loading the mac OS, the CPU is being disabled. I have every requirement known for this to work according to the 20 sites I have gone to regarding installing mac on my PC. The main problem.....the CPU continues to be disabled whatever I do. Hmm, this is my 3rd comment today, sorry about that.

Seem to work perfectly. I've been trying to install OSX SL anywhere i've been, since the release of it. This is first time it succeeded! Thaaaanks.
Besides, is it possible that this would work on a physical computer too?
You know, if i "burned" the ISO to a USB drive/stick, and burned the little ISO that you included, onto a CD or something? Or simply another pendrive?
  • Tom Johnson
I've been all over the boards. Something about my core i7 Processor. I've tried it with Virtualization enabled and disabled.

Learned that you need to POWER OFF your laptop when you change this for 15 seconds, not just change BIOS and reboot.

But either state, fails to get past the error "Invalid front-side bus frequency 66000000 Hz." and "Disabling the CPU".

I've tried to change the ICH7M.PRESENT and SMC.PRESENT to all 4 combinations of TRUE and FALSE, and toggeled the VIRTUALIZATION in BIOS, but cannot figure out what is wrong.

Also tried booting SNOW_DARWIN.ISO, then choosing a .ISO created from the DVD and from the DVD directly.

I used the DVD on a Mac to test that it is working fine--so I know it is a working DVD.

I've tried it in VMWARE Workstation and VMWARE server--both do the same thing.
  • Ari

Hello, I have a doubt, should I get a Snow Leopard Retail DVD, or should I get a distro because I got an AMD processor..
    I hope you could answer.
  • Mac on PC?? WHAAT?? O.O
Personally, buying the Mac OSX Snow Leopard RETAIL DVD is a great idea, since its pretty cheap, indeed! 30 bucks, to be exact! You can buy it online or at an Apple store near your area. There are tutorials on how to install Snow Leopard 10.6 on your PC with just an iBoot CD! If you are interested, let me know and I will send you the links to the tutorials on how to do that, ok?? Just trying to help ya! ;) If you have more questions, please feel free to ask anything related to Hackintosh OSx86 Distro or even with Snow Leopard itself!

Using either an iso image of the Mac OS X 10.6 installer or the DVD itself, I'm stuck at the boot menu. I right-click the CD icon on the lower right of the the Workstation 7 window, reset the path from Darwin_Snow to either of the above, and press c on the boot menu, but I only get the message "Please insert a CD." The iso I made through Terminal on a working Mac with 10.6.2, so I'm not absolutely positive it works, but the DVD I've used for many installations, so it definitely works. Anyone know how I can fix it?

Having the same issue as jon, above. I have a dmg I made from a OS X dvd that i converted to an iso and i'm seeing the same message when i press 'c'. Any ideas?
  • Lord Vulture
    I had experienced this too.
    Solved by doing this:
    -shut the virtual machine down
-change the config for the cd pointing it to the Darwin_ISO image
    -Save and close VMWare
    -Restart your computer
    -let Windows com up
-insert your Retail Snow Leo DVD
-open WindowsExplorer and see if there's two units (in my case, E: and G:). One is assigned for a CD unit and the other for a DVD or BD unit. You have to choose the last one whem configuring VMWare after you have booted Darwin ISO and pressed F8.
    Good Luck!

This is because for some reason it is not connected. make sure you click on connect from the options for the DVD/CD drive in the VM Settings / CD ROM settings.

I am trying to install OS X but it keeps saying "Invalid front-side bus freqeancy 6600000 Hz., Disabling the CPU" I am stuck with this and havent founs a solution to the problem. Please help.
  • KrysaLee
I'm having that exact same problem and exact same message. Anyone have any idea at all on how to fix this issue?

The blog writer said to twitter and he will help. If someone makes a blog to try and help people, he should be reading commments here and helping. Not abandoning his blog right after he creates it.
  • rickmaan
I have a lenovo/IBM thinkpad T60p (Intel Dual core T2600 processor) with 2gb of ram and am repeatedly seeing the "Invalid front-side bus" issue. I've tried the "-v busratio=10/45/7" after hitting F8 and booting the off of the SL install disk..

I really want to get this going, and truly appreciate all the installation guides you folks hav put her but am stuck..

    Does anyone have a solution?

    Thanks in advance.
  • rickmaan
Has anyone figured out what to do about the "Invalid front-side bus frequency" issue? I've followed the instructions several times and each time the SL install starts I get that error message.

Running an Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad with Intel Dual-core (T2600) processor and 2gb of ram.

I'm really looking forward to getting it running but this is getting very frustrating and it seems to be a common issue.

    Please help!

    Thanks in advance

Wow, a 6.6MHz bus? That's pretty slow, lol.
  • ramzada
Not sure why it says that, I run a Dual core AMD Turion 64, im confused by it hehe.

What do you do when you don't have hardware virtualization? (Intel Core2Duo P7350)
  • Mac on PC?? WHAAT?? O.O
You cant use Virtual Machines on VMWare WorkStation or VirtualBox if you dont have Intel VT-x or AMD-V. Your best option would be to either dual boot Windows and Mac OSX, or run Mac OSX Snow Leopard solely on your main hard drive by itself. If you do that, you can download VMWare Fusion within Mac OSX and install it to run multiple operating systems, especially Windows 7 Ultimate! :) If you buy the Snow Leopard RETAIL disc for 30 bucks, you can use an iBoot CD to install it on your PC, even if you have either an ATI, AMD, or Intel graphics card/processor! If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask me! My e-mail is: demonnaoto89@hotmail.com
    ;)

    lulz.
yeah right. got also QE working on my dog and my 3-legged chair.

  • @Taranfx - If you install vmware tools you can resize the VM window to anysize you want, why would you use the Graphics Mode string? Where is the link to this magical EFI? Unless you have videos of QE/CI in the VM I call *****...Normally GraphicsEnabler == an injector so what is being injected?

  • timesheep
    BEEECAAAUSE:
If you stretch the window, it's not always setting a new resolution, or well, as long as you don't have VMWare tools :/
  • cipp
hey I can't get your files (VMWare image .vmdk, darwin_snow.iso, Vmware sound card drivers) I receive this http://www.zshare.net/adsblocked.html
  • auzy
hey taranfx ! keep up the good work. I have downloaded all the things which is required according to the guide. I have one question whether i have to make a separate partition i know it a virtual machine but in drive c: i have gt 10gb free space is this enough or i need more. Waiting for the reply...

Need help with boot loader -
    1. Installed VMware Workstation 7
    3. Got retail DVD
    2. Formatted external Hard Drive using Disk Utility with GUID partition to install SL. Did not want to install on local hard drive.
    3. Installation is complete…Disk Utility is showing some 160,000 files on the external drive
    4. Now, when I restart VM using the iso again..I get 3 options –
    a. Boot DVD
    b. Boot First Hard Disk
    c. eject DVD

    5. External hard drive is available to VM using the VM>Removable device setting

How do I point tool to boot from external hard drive and not the “First Hard Disk”???

    Thanks.
  • ThaiGuy
Thank you very much for sharing. Working GREAT! I can't believe sound works too.
    My system:
    AMD Phenom 9950 running Win 7 x64.
    VMWareWorkStation 7
installed OSx Snow Leo by Hazard
  • How do you go about getting QE/CI to work? I installed Chameleon RC4 and edited the com.apple.Boot.plist file as said in the post, but I'm not getting QE/CI. I do have resolution change (after installing VMware Tools).
  • dudenesspa
Hey man this is so awesome! Best way for me to get the most use out of Windows7 and OSX. Two questions:

    1. What EFI do you recommend installing to get QE/CI to work?
    2. Can we upgade to 10.6.2 safely?

    Great Work!
  • TW
Hey guys. I get to the boot up fo the snow leopard dvd but then vmware stops the machine and says that one of the virtual cpus has entered the shutdwon state. How to i get around this?
  • tay187
I have these specs first of all:
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 @ 2.66ghz
    8.0gb RAM
    Windows 7 32bit Installed
Retail Snow Leopard DVD (made by myself)
    Snowy_VM downloaded from the guide

Working on getting Snow Leopard installed in VMWare Workstation 7. Followed the guide, did everything it says to, but it hangs on the reboot at the Apple Logo with the grey screen. The little dotted wheel keeps turning and turning but never boots into the OS. Any pointers by anyone with the same problem would be greatly appreciated!!
  • 8 GB And Wiindows 7 32 Bit ! 32 Biw version can't use more than 3.25 Gb Of Ram or max 4 GB , Install the 64 Bit version to get the real performance
  • Mac on PC?? WHAAT?? O.O
Depending on your system information, you can only run a certain version depending whether you have a strong processor or not. If your system is a 32bit, then install the 32bit version. You cant install a 64bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate on a 32bit system. It doesnt make sense. By the way, if you hadn't noticed, Windows 7, as an operating system, costs 300 bucks in Retail Stores, compared to Mac OSX Snow Leopard, which is 30 bucks!! Thats insane! O.O Running Hackintosh on PC is SUPER EPIC FUN!
  • jdoyle1983
Just keep rebooting, it will get there (took me about 10 reboots), and I have found that if you ever have to reboot the os, you may need to repeat the continued reboot process.
  • Mike Bell
When I select 'Install VMware tools' I get the following pop-up box.

'Could not find component on update server. Contact VMware Support or your system administrator.'

Have you seen this before or know a workaround?
  • Henri
Mount the darwin_snow.iso if all goes well a VMWare Tools Icon appears on the MAC desktop. Open it and then install VMWare Tools . . . . . (took me a while too before I figured this out . . . :P )
  • generatOR
    Awesome! thanks. worked!
  • alexanderkolev
This is exactly what I do but still get the same error message. Any additional info would be appreciated. Thanks.
  • Fr. Giulio
    Hi. Giulio From Italy.
    All OK!

Just needed a couple of reboot and now it's running on an I7 920 at 3.2GHz (in O.C.), with Windows 7 and VMWare 7.

    Great Job.
    Thank you!

    Hi.
    Giulio From Italy.

I've installed FINAL CUT STUDIO 3 (WOW) on VMWare despite to the 0Kb VRAM Error.
Just download Final Cut Studio 3 (44Gb!!!)

Edit this file in the ISO Image:
    Installer > FinalCutStudio.mpkg > Contents > Resources > Requirements Checker.app > Contents > Resources > minsys.plist

and change it to this (changed a couple of STOP into WARN):

    Yeah!

    Bye.
  • ToP
    wokrs on amd processors too?
  • Edmund
Would you expect this would work on a Linux VMware Workstation 7? Is it worth a try?
  • awake
I just got it to work on VMware Workstation 7 on Debian 64-bit :P I started by install the latest version of iDeneb, and then I created a second hard disk onto which I've installed retail snow leopard (by installing it from the working iDeneb installation). It worked perfectly, and I was able to update.
  • works flawlessly on ubuntu, other flavors too
  • Diogo Andrade
It's working! but I'm unsure on what VMwaretools SO (linux, windows, freebs, etc) I should install on snow leopard VM, since theMDK file provided comes with "other" SO selected.
  • steliosx
i star the thinks and everythink is ok until his give me this message:
the cpu has been disabled by quest operating system. you will need to power off or reset the virtual machine at this point.
    what i must do?
    thank youF
    my laptop is VAIO VGN-FW51Z
  • Rich
You have edit your mvx file and change the value smc.present = "TRUE" to smc.present = "FALSE", then you'll be able to restart and shutdown without any problem/
  • hyundaimenu
I have de same problem. Did you find any solution?
    Thank you.
  • TW
I've been trying to do this but all I get is "A virtual CPU has entered the shutdown state. This would have caused a physical machine to restart. This can be caused by an incorrect configuration of the virtual machine, a bug in the operating system or a problem in the VMware Workstation software..."

I don't get why I am getting this. I did enter the -v mode and the last thing it says is that it is entering Darwin. Please help! Thank You!
  • disapointed
No luck here. Tried twice, it installs ok but upon the first reboot it just throws 'operating system not found'
  • Srinath Sridhar
I got the same message. Copy the iso file to the vmware vmdk directory and then connect to the iso image by right clicking on the CD in the bottom right at bootup time.
  • tay187
your darwin.iso file is probably not in the virtual drive or it is pointing to the wrong location... try that
  • Jericho
Thank you very much for sharing this. Got it working flawlessly... well, except for the bit where I had to convert the DMG image of the OS install into an ISO so that it can be mounted directly by Workstation (ended up using PowerISO after a few failed attempts with other tools).

Other than that. I'm very pleased with it. The performance is quite decent and useable. Not too bad for a poor man's Mac.
  • Thanks for sharing your experience :)
  • madhavvk
    Great!!!
I followed your guide, and wow!!! now I'm running Mac OS X Snow Leo on my VMWare.
    Thanks buddy!

Only one thing that I noticed is every time I shut down the Mac OS, it displays the message to Press and Hold Power Button.......

    Need your help.

    Thanks ones again.

    Cheers,
    Madhav V Khadilkar. (Mady!)
  • HR19
Yeah, this really didn't work for me at all. I got VMware Workstation 7, downloaded the stuff, but when I tried to run darwin_snow.iso, I just got this error message: "Mac OS X is not supported with software virtualization. To run Mac OS X you need a host on which VMware Workstation supports hardware virtualization." I even tried it on my mom's laptop, which will run Sun Virtual Box. But, I can't get this to work. I couldn't find any information online about this (type of) error.
  • Mac on PC?? WHAAT? O.O
Make sure to enable "Intel VT-x and AMD-V" in your VM settings. As long as you do that, it should work. :) To make sure it works, restart your computer and press the function key that takes you to your BIOS. Check all the settings until you find something about Virtualization technology, and ENABLE it. As long you follow my instruction, you will be booted into Mac OSX Snow Leopard in minutes!
  • What CPU are you using? If ur cpu supports VT, go and enable it in BIOS under "Hardware Virtualization" or something similar.
  • BMY
    Same thing here...CPU VT turned on...Win 7 Ultimate - 64bit, VMWare Workstation 7
  • John
CPU VT turned on, Win 7 Ultimate - 32bit, and Win 7 Premium 64 bit, VMWare Workstation 7. Still!
  • HR19
I'm using an AMD Athlon 64 X2. Sun VirtualBox will do Ubuntu or Fedora on my current settings, but I'll try that real quick. I'm pretty sure I had virtualization enabled in the BIOS. However, I don't much care anymore. I just wanted it 'cause I couldn't figure out how to do something using HTML and JavaScript, but I found my answer.
  • how to do it with virtualbox??
  • Not yet possible, I'm trying to get it working on it, stay tuned
  • Staffan
    Works brilliantly!!
