How to Tether Motorola Droid

Whatever iDon’t, Droid does. The advertising campaign from Verizon had been incomplete. Droid will be able to do much more than Verizon is telling you. For example: free tethering, iPhone-like multitouch and CPU overclocking.

Just like  the jailbreak community on the iPhone, there’s a group of Android developers determined to grant any Google-powered phone free access to every feature imaginable. And they’re able to accomplish this task more legitimately than underground iPhone hackers, since Android’s source code is completely open to developers.and to add to it, Android 2.0 is now Open Source, so it becomes prevalently much more easier.

However, it’s possible to Tether your Motorola Droid even today. All you need to do is follow the steps carefully.

What you’ll need:

  1. USB Driver – Download or Download (Mirror)
  2. Tethering Software – [PDANet] Download (Full  version costs $29, onetime)

Step 1. First, Install PDANet software on your desktop and Phone. The moment you install it on desktop, it will automatically install the USB driver for you, if it doesn’t, you can use the USB driver above to install.

Step 2. Make sure you have USB Debugging still enabled. Connect your Droid to the USB and on  phone, launch the PDANet software. Click on “Turn PdaNet On“.

Step 3. Once it is turned on, you can then go to your PC and “Connect” on the PDANet software on your taskbar. You are done, You have Tethered Droid successfully, enjoy the High speed wireless Internet.

Step 4. (Optional, only for Bluetooth) If you need Bluetooth Tethering, first thing you need to do is pair your phone with your PC via bluetooth connection.

Step 5. Once successful, create a Dial-up Networking Connection (DUN). When asked what modem to use, select the Bluetooth Modem Driver. It will ask you for a username and password, select you won’t need to use one. It will ask you to for a phone number to use to dial out. Use “123″ as the phone number.

That’s it. If you need any help/assistance or have any questions, or need more Android updates Follow us on Twitter @taranfx

Just got the version 2.42 and having trouble with it. I had the 2.41 and no trouble. And I got the paid version. The motorola droid is not doing good with the 2.42.

I have downloaded and installed the software, it says its working and on, but none of my web pages load. I went through the settings and made sure PDAnet was my default connection, still nothing.

This app is great until you get a new computer. I've tried everything to transfer to my new computer and it just plan refuses and customer service is slow and generally can't help. So it works at first but if your thinking about getting a new computer any time soon wait to get pdanet on it.

Is it possible to tether internet from my rooted motorola droid to my wii. I have tried everything i could think of, PDANET, Easy Tether and my wifi wireless tether. The Wii will find the wireless tether wifi, but when i test the connection it just gives me an error code any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  • I tried this. I did not work on my Mac book pro. can u help?

my question is do you have to pay extra for tethering on a $30 data base plan on moto droid?is there a internet fee?
  • Chuck
No need to buy anything or install any drivers to tether a Droid. I simply connected my Droid to my Windows 7 laptop via the USB port and it automatically found it and allowed me to connect to it and surf the Internet.
  • Libor
Hey Chuck, I've tried to load PDAnet drivers on my laptop 7 and i gives me an errer, can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Lib

On verizon plan you need to pay like $60 bucks a month for "unlimited" internet which means in verizon terms you cant go over a 5GB data transfer limit or they start to charge you by the kb, Do you still get charged if you go over the 5GB data transfer on this PDAnet app?
  • pshendrickson
So has anyone found out if Verizon can tell that you are tethering your phone? I only need it for a backup, when I get to close to my 5GB on my mi-fi.
  • VZW Chicago
VZW flags accounts that stream data at rates faster than typical PDA usage, such as streaming video. Typical data usage for a PDA is well under the 5GB cap that is provided. If an account is consistently streaming data atypical of "normal" usage, that account may be involuntarily terminated for violating the terms and conditions of the wireless service agreement, and will be billed an early termination fee. I would advise against tethering your Motorola Droid until android 2.2 is available and a tethering feature is added. in the interim VZW offers a high usage Mobile Broadband plan that is not advertised, if you are concerned about data overage on your mi-fi.
  • Jerome
I love it when VZW drones try to sway consumers away from easy access items like this. That company is making it's money and will never terminate service for tether. You really need to reconsider your priorities. The $10.00 an hour that they are paying you is chump change and you should question an organization that feeds you misinformation. I have tethered my Droid for a month now and have seen no changes in service fees. But that is what they tell you to think. Dude, I feel for you. I really do.
  • Scary Bob
But really, what is different about the packets sent to and from the phone, versus to and from the PC (through the phone)? I watch high def videos on my Droid now on YouTube and other sites, download large files, and browse even non-PDA friendly versions of websites. So how is that any different from doing it on my PC via the phone? In other words, how can VZW "prove" I was tethering and not just using my smartphone heavily, on my UNLIMITED data plan? Sounds like a good lawsuit when VZW tries to terminate my contract and charge me a termination fee.

HI, I have a mac and windows laptops. Can I use my droid to tether both (not at the same time)? I have it hooked up for the windows laptop now. I downloaded the PDanet on the Mac and clicked on the icon wouldn't even open.

  • Mpeg
Using it on my Mac OS 10.58 I love it! 1.05mb/s down. 0.50mb/s up. Not too bad!
  • Cstrayer
Hi - I'm on MAC OS 10.6.4 - everything i read is for how to do it on a PC - how did you do it for your MAC?
  • Texas Trophy
Works like a charm! I went to pay for the full version of PDANet and it was only $19!
  • Fireeyes1019
just download easytether off ur android market its free
  • edwin
    is the connection secure
  • SouthGAMan
    worked like a charm..easy as 1,2,3
  • rubbadubdub100
pda net won't download on my droid what do i do?
  • Fireeyes1019
    download easytether its free
  • Worked flawlessly for me on my Droid and I didn't buy the full version of PDAnet.
    Here's a simpler explanation:
    1. On your Droid, download PDAnet free edition
    2. On your PC, go to http://www.junefabrics.com/android/download.php to download PDAnet for PC (it's free also).
    3. Install PDAnet on your PC. It will tell you when to plug your Droid into your PC and how to enable USB debugging when you do.
    4. Once the driver is done installing the program will let you know its done installing as well.
    5. On your Droid open PDAnet app and press button to "Enable USB tether".
    6. On your PC right-click PDAnet systray icon and click "Connect".
    7. You should see a new "PDAnet modem" internet connection icon in your system tray.
    All done.
  • krmi
yes it does work, but only for a few days. then it blocks all https sites such as myspace. You have to purchase it to get the abilty back. The same issue with easytether. Anyone find one that doesnt put a time limit on full access?
  • Bri
Thanks so much! Installation was flawless and it is working great! Question, does anyone know if Verizon can track that you are tethering your phone? Also, how long does the free version last? I would be willing to pay additional money for the PDAnet...but wasn't sure, if it let's you know when it expires...etc.
  • SW in VA
    It lets you know
  • Pinky
Thanks for the tip Adam it works like a charm.....
Do you think it works for the HTC eris droid as well?
  • BRG
working great. just installed. quite easy.
  • wz
Can verizon find out if we are tethering or not? And would they find a way to make you pay?
  • If you use excessive data, they will figure out. In other cases also, they can if they want to, but I don't think they do.
  • Mari
I'm doing something wrong. I purchased the full version for droid. Recieved the email. But can seem to get to the download. help
