Worked flawlessly for me on my Droid and I didn't buy the full version of PDAnet.
Here's a simpler explanation:
1. On your Droid, download PDAnet free edition
2. On your PC, go to http://www.junefabrics.com/android/download.php to download PDAnet for PC (it's free also).
3. Install PDAnet on your PC. It will tell you when to plug your Droid into your PC and how to enable USB debugging when you do.
4. Once the driver is done installing the program will let you know its done installing as well.
5. On your Droid open PDAnet app and press button to "Enable USB tether".
6. On your PC right-click PDAnet systray icon and click "Connect".
7. You should see a new "PDAnet modem" internet connection icon in your system tray.
All done.

If you use excessive data, they will figure out. In other cases also, they can if they want to, but I don't think they do.
