We had been into Mac OS X Installation on PC for a long time now. We ‘ve produced several flawless guides, though complexity may have varied.

With all your generous support, we are now able to produce the Easiest Guide to Install Snow Leopard on PC.

Update: You can upgrade to OS X 10.6.2 without any issues.

Before We Start:

  • This is “Retail method” for Installation [Most Trusted]
  • You need Supported hardware.
  • 8GB or Higher USB drive.
  • Snow Leopard Install DVD ($29 upgrade disk works) or an equivalent downloaded ISO.
  • Another Mac to prepare your thumb drive. You can also do this over a Hackintosh PC.
  • The EP45UD3P Snow Leopard install package: Download. This Automates all CommandLine work.

Step 1: Prepairing USB

First, we’re going to format usb thumb drive, later  copy the Snow Leopard DVD image to the thumb drive.

Watch the video in HD and fullscreen to get clearer look at the process.

After you restore the Snow Leopard install DVD to your thumb drive, all you’ve got to do is Run the EP45UD3P Snow Leopard.pkg file (download link above), select your thumb drive, and, let the installer will take care of all the work.

Step 2. Configuring BIOS:

You’ve got to make some small adjustments to your BIOS.

  • Boot Priority: Enable USB Boot, and set USB thumb drive the highest priority for Boot.
  • AHCI Mode: SATA RAID/AHCI Mode  should be set to AHCI
  • ACPI Power mode: Set it to S3(STR).

If you have trouble finding these settings, refer to the images below (click to enlarge) credits to Adam Pash.

Step 3: Installation

Now comes the easy part.

Restart PC, Make sure your prepared thumb drive is plugged into your PC. :

As shown in the Video: Boot into the Snow Leopard installer, format the hard drive you want to install Snow Leopard to (go to Utilities -> Disk Utility, then click on the drive, select 1 Partition, Mac OS X Journaled, give it a name, and make sure GUID Partition Table is set in the Options. After you Apply the new partition, go back to the installer and install like normal to that drive. When you reboot after the install completes, press the arrow keys at the graphical boot menu and select the drive you just installed Snow Leopard to.

Step 4. Minor Tweaks (optional but good to have)

You should have everything working by now. But here are few additional, optional steps to enhance your Experience:

1. Get Sound Fully working:

Sound isn’t entirely working yet. You may notice that sound actually does work in some instances, but not all. All you should actually need to do is open up the Sound preference pane in System Preferences (/Applications/System Preferences), click the Output tab, and change the output device to Built-in Line output (I haven’t tested with digital out, but it should work fine in theory).

2. Boot into Snow Leopard without USB Thumb Drive

Right now, your Hackintosh needs USB to boot. To boot from internal harddisk,  install the custom bootloader to your hard drive. Unzip EP45UD3P Snow Leopard.pkg zip file that you downloaded initially, run it and select the hard drive you’ve installed Snow Leopard to. Once the installer completes, you’ll no longer need your thumb drive plugged in to boot into Snow Leopard.

Bingo! You installed Snow Leopard on PC by the Easiest Way!

    Hi taran,

first of all, thanks for your guide. Looks easier as anything i've found so far. Still, i need your help.

I prepared my thumb drive as described above and when i boot from it, i get the darwin loader screen. But shortly after I get a kernel panic, just the same as alexannic got: 'Should have 2 threads but only found 3 for Die...'

Now I wonder if - like in his case- my processor isn't supported. I do have an intel core 2 quad q9300 boxed. I thought this one actually was supported by SnowLeo. But please tell me if i'm wrong about that ;)

    My other hardware:
    - MSI P45 Neo-F
    - 4GB DDR2 RAM
    - ATI Radeon HD 4870

Thanks a lot, I appreciate any help I can get!
  • samsa
    Addition to the post above:

I forgot to mention that I can't set this option "AHCI Mode: SATA RAID/AHCI Mode should be set to AHCI" in BIOS. I just can choose IDE.
I tried this guide to enable AHCI http://www.ithinkdiff.com/how-to-enable-ahci-in... but it doesn't change a thing.
Do I have to flash my BIOS? Actually, I wanted to avoid that, don't want my PC ending up chrashed.

    Thanks again!!
  • flashing the BIOS is not required in 90% of the cases. DEfault setting (though not shown in BIOS) is fine.
  • eric
    All,

I think there is a safe/safer approach to testing if your hardware is compatible with OSX.
Install Vmware workstation on your windows box and install a virtual OSX. That should be telling if it will work at all.

Tomorrow Im getting a pc, first time in years, to try and install OSX on it, or run ESX4 on it so I can then run a virtual OSX at least.

Hello there, great guide, EXCEPT...I have a school laptop. I have 4 partitions on it.

1: Windows XP (Required for school)
2: Backup (Stuff for school, also an account is linked to this drive)
3: iPC OSx86 (just small partition for iPC)
4: Snow Leopard (largest partition, awaiting Snow Leopard install!!)

So I absolutely CANNOT format the entire hard drive, I need it! Is there any way at all to set it to GUID Partition Table, but just for the Snow Leopard partition, and NOT by formatting the entire hard drive???

GREATLY appreciated if you can help!!! :D

Hey, I have a school laptop with 4 partitions on it. One for Windows XP... (need that one for school) one that's just backup files FOR school (need that one too, because one of my accounts is linked to it), one for iPC OSx86 and one for Snow Leopard (blank). So I CANNOT format the entire hard drive. I need the stuff. So, is there any way to make the Snow Leopard partition GUID WITHOUT formatting the entire hard drive??

GREATLY appreciated if anyone can help! :)

I also experienced this, the processor is running slow as molasses, which is why the cursor jumps, not to mention the inordinate amount of time to get to that point. I believe it has to do with the bootloader, but I could be wrong about this. I used the magic package in conjunction with some leopard disks and also experienced the dreadfully slow bootup which is what leads me to think its the bootloader, and no leopard distro did this on my dell studio 15 laptop before either. I am looking for flags that tackle this, theres a ratio flag I have seen but dont know if that will work, but leads me to think it will.
  • DoctorT
I solved the "input not supported" by downloading a newer version of ep45ud3p v3.
    Found it using Google

    Hello,
I have formatted a 16 Gb USB drive with GUID partitioning system. I have made a Mac OS X Install DVD disk image from a legally bought SnowLeopard DVD. However when I try to use DiskUtility to restore the mounted Mac OS X Install DVD to the USB drive, by dragging the image in the left column over to the Source: field, it won't "stick" and so I cant do it. I feel foolish but what can I do? Thanks
  • JohnnyPlaid
I have a kinda the same problem, I have made an iso of my real install disk with Toast and partitioned my 16gb usb the way told but when I go to Restore to the iso image it gives me the following error. It tells me that it cannot restore the image because my iso needs to be imagescanned so I try to do that with disk utility but it either says 'resources temp unavailable' (Something like that) or "Unable to scan "Mac OS X Install DVD.iso (Invalid argument)." I don't know what to do...I cannot figure it out. Thank you so much for your help.
  • cky1billion
mount the image first, once you see it under the image name, then drag the little sub image thing to the restore tab. Sorry I cant be more specific, play with it you will see.
  • tay187
If you still have your disc, rip it as a .dmg file... i had to do the same and mine worked with a .dmg but not with a .iso... try that out?
  • DoctorT
I tried to install from USB but got a blank screen showing input mode not supported.
On that screen which appeared right after the boot I typed "Graphics Mode"="1024x768x32" enter (I couldn't see what I was writing so it is important to get i right) Then installation started

I have problems with "out of range" graphic signal. How can I change the boot loader on the USB stick to start using a lower frequency?
  • timesheep
When i choose to boot from my USB stick (i haven't even installed it yet) nothing happens, exept there is a blinking underscore. It stays there for a long time, so i don't assume it's supposed to do that...
  • Mark
did you ever get an answer to this? I have the exact same problem.
  • Street
hi i dont have a usb stick with 8 gb or more so can u please tell me how to make a boot through an external hard drive
  • alexannic
    Hello,

I cannot get SL to boot the first time, shortly after Darwin loads I get a kernel panic message:
'Should have 2 threads but only found 3 for Die...'
    http://it.tinypic.com/r/25gzdwl/6

    Notes:
    - I have tried booting with -cpus=1, arch=i386 and -x but with no luck.
    - BIOS Settings: AHCI set, ACPI: S3(STR)

Strange, but when i enter the -cpus=1 setting I get exactly the same error message (2 threads but only found 3) as if nothing happened. But if I disable the 2nd core through BIOS, the message changes, and says: 'should have 1 thread but only found 2'! Link:
    http://it.tinypic.com/r/oqkiuh/6

    My Desktop PC setup:
-Intel Pentium Dual Core E5300 2.6Ghz
    - Foxconn MB P43A01 with P45/P43 RevA3 chipset
    - 2GB RAM DDR2 400MHz
    - ATI Radeon HD 4770

Thank you for your help! I really appreciate it!

  • tay187
You ever find a solution to this?? Mine is doing the exact same thing no matter what BIOS settings I try...
  • eldhosegeorge
MAC snow leopard doesn't support Pentium D processors. u will have to upgrade it to Core2Duo.

I hope this clears ur doubts
  • tay187
if you open the OSX installer from the USB/Hard Drive you made, I deleted the DMCT or whatever file from under the Extra's folder and it now can boot to the installer screen, but now I have the problem of it not seeing my hard drive :(

Using this guide. If I wanted to dual boot windows 7 which I already have installed.
Would installing Osx as per this guide on a sepperate partition work? Would i still use guid partition table when i format the disk or should i use MBR if i want to dual boot.
If so let me just make sure I know what i am doing before I attempt.
After Os x I then have to boot with windows 7 CD and repair installation then add OSX entry with Easy BCD. Am I right?

    Thnx so much
  • Louis
I would like to do the same thing. Did you get an answer to that question? I would like to be able to dual boot between my Windows 7 partition and the Mac OSX partition. Did you succeed modifying the boot entry with bcdedit?

    Thanks!

    Good Day Taran,

Kudos for all these great tutorials and I could say that they are easy to follow.

Would like to ask for your help as I am having issues with this USB method. This is my Notebook Specifications :

    Sony Vaio VGN-CR353
    Core2Duo Processor (2.1GHZ)
    4gb RAM
    ATI Radeon X2300

In this notebook I have set up a dual boot for Win7 and iPC OSx86 (10.5.6). iPC works fine except I could not crank the resolution further and WIFI :(

I followed these detailed steps for SL installation via USB but I keep getting the Restart your PC error. Attempted to boot into safe mode and I got the message systemshutdown false and some other strings of "directory not found" or something like that. So my question is, is there any other way to tweak the installer or the files from the patcher I guess and could it be that this is not compatible with my hardware? ( I suppose not, pretty much I have the generic ones. ) and lastly if you have any workaround to get my resolution and wifi fixed for iPC.

    Appreciate your help mate.

    Have a wonderful day ahead.
  • sebwick
I managed my prepare my thumb drive correctly. But when I launch it at boot you see the normal apple loading logo but then a message comes open saying that I should hold down the power button and restart.

    Why?
  • seems like you got trapped in a Kernel Panic. Boot with option "-v" on darwin console and let me know the error text u see at the last. or if u can get a pic of it.

    Hello,

First of all, thanks a lot for the guide. Everything worked for me except after the installation is completed and I press the restart button, I do not get to the screen where I can choose the drive to start Snow Leopard. Instead it automatically goes into this grey Apple logo screen where it does not make any progress at all.

I installed Snow Leopard from a USB drive (partion 1) to the same USB drive (partion 2).

    Any ideas?

I could not get this to work either. I was having same problems as Denis.

One option I could not set in bios was this

ACPI Power mode: Set it to S3(STR).

    I only had S3(POS) not S3(STR)

Also I could not work out how to enter the options -x -v -cpu=1

When booting I got the screen up with the drive to install and if I press down I get several options there.

hi, I also performed this tut and loaded everything perfectly until the darwin load screen, it boots up through darwin then to the apple screen where it shows the circle ring loader. After a few mins it then continues to circle and a little icon on the apple icon appears which is supposedly is a red stop sign. And it just hangs after that until it restarts. I don't know whats the problem, can anyone help out here?
  • bmilesp
do you think this would wotk with OSX 10.6 Server? or would i need a multitude of drivers and more hackery? Excellent article!
  • To be honest, I never Tried Leopard server via this method. But when I think about it, there's nothing different that would stop it from doing that.

I think it depends on the BIOS spec of the PC/notebook. I've got the same behaviour on my HP 8530p, I did the same thing as you and I still can't boot by the USB thumb drive. Anyone could help please???

I might need your help here. I tried booting into my USB stick after installing abracadabra package. However, I got stuck at this screen with nothing to go on after..

Just an update. My system is running dual boot on MBR, Win7 and Leopard.
For that, I tried partitioning my usb stick as MBR. It worked and booted into Apple Spinning Grey screen, and I got a KP as per the first post. Lolz..

Additionally, I notice that the abracadabra stated 64bit. My SL10A32, i believe its 32bit. Any issues?

Would it be possible to use this install method from a eSATA drive? I have an eSATA port on my laptop.
  • varashi
it also gives me the error:
could not unlink playlist /var/db/bootcache.playlist: read only file system
  • Varun
when i boot from usb drive it gives me the following message and stops:
Boot cache: could not terminate cache on bad hitrate
    What do i do?
  • Prashant
I followed every step carefully. But when i boot my pc using the prepared USB stick, the installation says 'Loading Darvin' and then gets stuck at the grey apple logo screen. What am i missing here?
  • matt
Regarding the getting stuck booting at the logo screen. I did boot with verbose and looked like it got stuck with this message:

USBF: 296.270 [a bunch of letters and numbers] The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.

So I guess that means there is a problem with the USB drive. I tried it on both my USB ports but get the same message.

Any idea how to fix this? Any BIOS change needed?

    Thanks!
  • matt
I have the same problem as Prashant. When I boot from the USB it gets stuck on the gray screen with the Apple logo....not even a spinner. Any fix for that? Thanks!

    Hi,

I tried to install using this guide, the only thing different was I used a USB hrad drive instead of the USB thumb dirve and the PC reboots after the screen that said Loading Darwin. I could not get any further. Any suggestion?

    Thanks
  • Booting from USB HardDisk is bit tricky. You have to set the partition active.
  • kevinmscs
Thanks. Which partition should be set to active? Did you mean the USB hard drive partition where OS X is located (or created using the DVD) or the target partition (the blank local hard drive) where we'll install OS X into it?
  • The USB HDD partition on which OS X is created from DVD
  • kevinmscs
Sorry for the dumb question but how do i do that?
  • timesheep
    In windows you go:
Start > Control Panel > Administrative tools > Computer management > Storage > Disk Management.

Choose your disk, right click the partition, and click mark partition as active ;)
  • Xzar
This option is greyed out for me. And windows treats my Ext. HDD as 3 partition(one of them not used). Where would be the problem?
  • timesheep
Well, you might need administrator privileges, but i always forget them, since I am the administrator, and have turned off UAC. So i don't notice it.Try right-clicking Computer Management, and run with administrative privileges.
Besides you can always try using the full access recovery admin account built-in. This is a pretty dangerous way to gain administrator access though. Give it a google, i forgot how to enable it.

After the "Darwin loading" text a screen with a loading-icon is starting. But after 2 seconds the screen is black - nothing happends. I have a Asus ENGTX260 (NVIDIA GeForce GTX260)
  • One More thing, I see that Kernel Panic is related with ACPI. It could be that you didn't set it as described. If you did, try different values. Secondly, -x -v -cpu=1 while booting, Thirdly unplug all USB devices and try rebooting without them.
Also let me know after what exactly did it happen.
  • Dennis
How can I boot with this options: -x -v -cpu=1

I can't find any section where I can type this bootoptions..
  • While booting, specify these options at boot prompt. Also try booting in safe mode by Holding SHIFT key during boot
  • Dennis
    What is Kernel Panic?
  • I guess you are new to Mac world: Kernel Panic happens when some critical fault comes into picture. In this situation it cannot be recovered due to a Hardware or software level fault, hence has to shutdown.
  • Question: did it boot once? Try safeboot with -x -v -cpu=1 option. If this works, Great!
By default, Snow Leopard, hence this method doesn't support Core i7, Max I tried was Intel Quad. However we can try a workaround. In Step 1 While creating The Install partitioin we have to introduce proper KEXTs (drivers) for your Motherboard. You can download those Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 motherboard kexts by referring to InsanelyMac's guide [It's fairly complex] http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?show...
Try downloading those and add those KEXTs by referring to older guide: http://www.taranfx.com/blog/how-to-install-mac-...
    This can get complex.
