Intel Atom-Z: Powerful Processor for Smartphones

Intel’s plans for entering smartphone market is making sweet progress. Few days back, Intel announced Official Android port to x86, Atom and today they demonstrated the next generation Atom processor that would lay the building blocks of the future smartphones.

ARM currently controls a big piece of the mobile processing market, but Intel is attempting to make a comeback.

To give you an estimate of the power of the new processor, Intel demonstrated Quake 3 running lightning fast (100fps) on one of their custom smartphones powered by Atom-Z (Moorestone), a 45nm chip.

Sony Ericsson had announced Vivaz witha Human-form-factor a while ago. Today at Mobile world conference, SE has unleashed another variant called Vivaz Pro. This handset has a full QWERTY keyboard without impacting the original design. I’t barely 2mm thicker than the non- keyboard model.

As rumored Earlier, Microsoft is going to make big on MWC 2010.

The Rumors are now taking a new shape with never before seen details.

Windows Phone 7 will sport an interface that’s “very similar” to the Zune HD, along with a complete revamp of the start screen, and a UI (codenamed METRO). Perhaps just as notably, the OS supposedly won’t support multitasking, with applications instead simply pausing themselves when in the background (exactly like iPhone). Microsoft’s long-rumored ‘Pink’ phone project has started to get up again. In a note to clients few days back, Jefferies analyst Katherine Egbert claimed that Microsoft is gearing up to launch a phone based on Windows Mobile 7.

Snapdragon 1.5Ghz DualCore Processor for Smartphones

The most interesting part of today’s smartphones (more evidently android) had been becuase of the processor.

Qualcomm’s famous 1GHz Snapdragon is the same processor that powers devices like Nexus One, HTC HD2, Sony Xperia X10, Xperia X3 and several others giving them that speed. Today, the fastest gets even more faster as Qualcomm announced two new chips that are going to power the next great mobile devices.

First one is the single-core Snapdragon 8X50A, a 45nm chip that’s essentially the next version of the 1GHz chip in the Nexus One clocked at 1.3GHz.

But the buzz is around the second processor which is the dual-core 8X72, which uses two Scorpion processor cores to achieve 1.5GHz. In India, 25 Million Chinese Phones Die Today

Indian Government has taken a big step to counter Mobile Phone Piracy. MSAI, Mobile standards Authority of India) has put down a new rule abiding to which, cellular operators will ban BTS-Registration for any of the cellphones which has a non-legal International Mobile Equipment Identity number also popularly known as the IMEI.

As I write this, there are only couple of hours left till all those phones meet the graveyard. However, MSAI wants peeople to get their IMEI registered, a way to control the legality of Phone identification and usage upto the standards. Owners of the Chinese-made handsets are crowding authorized outlets to get the IMEI on their handsets.

Adobe Flash 10.1 Mobile brings Full Flash, MultiTouch

Adobe, today, has updated its core Flash Player to 10.1 and Adobe AIR to v2.

Designers and developers can now build rich Web content for the browser when running the Flash Player on the desktop and mobile alike. Final releases of Flash Player 10.1 and AIR 2 are expected in the first half of 2010.

The big features in AIR 2 are: Support for USB mass storage devices, support for multi-touch and gesture-based input, improved support for local peripherals and native application processes, improved performance, and peer to peer and UDP networking.

Orange and T-Mobile Join Hands to Become UK’s Biggest Telecom Provider

The deals like this, brings new hopes for the customers and areas where Mobile usage isn’t as dense as US, Japan, China.

Today, as per the latest press release, Orange and T-Mobile, will join hands in a new joint venture, this fall.

At the moment, they are 3rd and 4th largest Telecom providers in UK. The merger will create the largest mobile company in the United Kingdom, with a subscriber base of more than 28.4 million which builds up roughly 37% of the market.

Currently the largest UK operator with a 27% share is Telefonica’s O2, which is the exclusive iPhone carrier. At the second place with 25% of the British market is Vodafone, the company which jointly owns a 48% stake of Verizon Wireless.

The merger of Orange and T-Mobile in the UK would be like Sprint and T-Mobile merging in the United States, breaking up the market into thirds.

There are few good reasons for Microsoft to be happy at the moment. Windows Mobile 6.5 Phone Final– New UI, Zune like has at last been announced for availability from October 6th.

Also opening Oct. 6 is the Windows Marketplace, Microsoft’s app store for all 6.X Windows phones, which we’re interested to see how it pans out.

And yes, they renamed it from Windows Mobile 6.5 to Windows Phone OS 6.5, my o my, why was that done? Doesn’t it look like iPhone OS, Palm WebOS, Android OS ? Anyway, there are good things to discuss about.

It’s Ripe and well cooked – Windows Mobile 6.5

Yea, older 6.x wasn’t good enough. The UI was sluggish non-smooth. thanks to shiny gadgets like iPhone, Pre, Android, our expectations have grown exponentially in alst 2-3 years.

Recently, Microsoft came with something to surprise us. One event gave an exclusive demo of the final version of the new Windows Phone operating system, running on a touch screen HTC Touch Diamond2.

And yes, they renamed it from Windows Mobile 6.5 to Windows Phone OS 6.5, my o my, why was that done? Doesn’t it look like iPhone OS, Palm WebOS, Android OS ? Anyway, there are good things to discuss about.

Graphics & UI – There is a complete Redesign of the OS UI and its Zune look-alike feel, a totally new thing. I liked Zune HD and windows Phone will feature it. Graphics have improved – For the first time Windows Phone features 24-bit colors in menu icons.though all the devices that I know off supported high colors, Native support from OS was absent.

iPhone SMS Hack Fix via Firmware Update

Apple had been silent on the Critical Vulnerability found by BlackHat’s security expert presenter, till Google went ahead with the similar fix for the Android platform.

I haven’t heard the official news coming directly Apple, but Carriers are doing it. First one to do is O2 UK, which announced that Apple will be releasing fix by weekend.

There’s no news from AT&T yet, but they are not far from.

It’s an admirably quick fix to a comically terrible problem. Probably, it will come as 3.0.1 or something similar. But at least Apple’s got an update infrastructure to match their relatively quick remedy; what’s really worrying is that some other vulnerable phones—mostly Windows Mobile handsets—are still vulnerable, and whatever updates Microsoft have in store may have a slightly harder time blanketing users without the near-daily update checking built into the .. As we briefly reviewed HTC HERO earlier, It is the first Google Android based Custom UI phone out to the market. HTC calls the it the Sense UI.

It features a 3.2-inch HVGA touch-screen display. The smartphone is optimized for Web, multimedia and other content and also includes aGPS, a digital compass, a gravity-sensor, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a 5-Megapixel autofocus camera and expandable microSD memory. The built-in browser just like your iPhone, but it supports Adobe Flash.

Earlier, we reported the new experimental overhaulled custom UI for Android Platform. Sony Ericsson XPERIA Rachael with Rich Android UI, Powered by 1Ghz.

And now, Electronics store Expansys has all the specs on the Android-based Sony Ericsson Xperia X3, large photos included. It looks with 4-inch 800 x 400-pixel Touchscreen(semi-Multitouch), Camera :8MP with LED flash light, Video Recording: VGA 640×480, and the yummy Custom-Android Rachael user interface powered by a blazing 1GHz processor.

Yea, You heard that right, Its now possible to install Google Android (mobile based OS) to your Laptop/Netbook. In actual, you don’t even have to install, it’s as easy with this live CD method. All you have to do is create a Live CD image of Google Android.

Update: Install Android on PC, Netbook Natively

A new Project has developed that will enable you to try this new Mobile OS in a Virtual machine environment such as VirtualBox, VMWare or any other computer that could be booted of a CD or a USB stick.

It’s been known for some time that it is possible to run Android on x86 hardware with a port for the Netbooks like Asus EEE PC appearing earlier this year, but it was very difficult until now to get Android running on other hardware or virtual machines.

LG GD900 Crystal – A Transparent Touch-screen phone.

The first transparent unique keypad phone is out. LG GD900 Crystal, which is billed as the world’s first transparent-design phone, and the transparent screen is as cool as we hoped and unexpectedly quiet feature-full.

The GD900 Crystal is a slider phone and features a 3-inch touch screen, with a hyped transparent keypad that lights up when opened. The keypad is a touch-sensitive controller which means you can use it to move through menus, navigate the Web, and even write using handwriting recognition.
LG has thrown in gesture support too. It looked to me like iPhone/iPod controls. You can launch applications with a swipe around the keypad. This includes multitouch, as does the main display, so you can pinch your fingers to zoom in to a photo or map.
If this is a touch-happy overload, you can also use it normally, to dial phone calls, and there’s vibrating feedback to let you know when you’ve hit the flat numbers.

Android exposes power to extend the platform to design Custom UI for richer, User experience. Earlier, we saw this in HTC Hero’s Sense UI, now SonyEricsson is ready with it.

Device is code-named “Rachael,” and today a video claiming to be the device’s custom Android UI has been seen over youtube.

Like the Sense UI, Rachael’s UI retains the three-panel “shade and drawer” Android layout, but completely overhauls the graphics and widgets.

HTC is back with yet another Android phone, continuing its Google Android domination with the new HTC Hero.

The HTC Hero, the third Android device from HTC, is the first device built on HTC Sense, the device-maker’s new customizable user interface.

“HTC Sense is focused on putting people at the center, by making your phone work in a more simple and natural way. This experience revolves around three fundamental principles that were designed by quietly observing and listening to how people live and communicate,” the company said in a statement. Essentially, HTC Sense makes phones simpler to use, HTC said.

It’s possible that in the future your voice conversations on your cell phone could generate enough electrical power to run the phone, without batteries.

And not just phones. The technology, which converts mechanical stress like vibrations into electrical energy, could power a whole range of low-power mobile devices and sensors.

That’s one possible outcome of recent work by a team of Texas researchers, who appear to have discovered that by building a certain type of piezoelectric material to a specific thickness (about 21 nanometers, compared to a typical human hair of 100,000 nanometers), you can boost its energy production by 100 percent.

Mobile devices and wireless sensors rely on batteries, and most of today’s battery technologies are relatively heavy and expensive, and take up a chunk of valuable real estate. So-called “energy harvesting” technologies can convert one kind of energy, such as vibrations or solar rays, into electricity.

I’ve been tired of “Android on X’s phone” stories for a while now, but Motorola’s Calgary shot my eyes wide open: It actually looks interesting! And it’s on Verizon. BGR says the QWERTY slider will focus on social networking—presumably in the same vein as the new Sidekick. I have a bit of doubt about that flat not-so-touch-type-y keyboard, but still, color me impressed: Futuretastic-looking hardware running Android on Verizon? Samsung has just officially announced its first phone running Google’s Android. The Samsung I7500 will be a cutting-edge device with a 3.2-inch OLED touchscreen, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, and Wi-Fi.

This model will have a tablet shape and an HVGA display. Users will need to depend on the touchscreen for text input and dialing numbers, as there is no hardware keyboard.

On its list of high-end features are a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera and 8 GB of built-in storage.

The Benefits of Android
The I7500 will run Android 1.5, an operating system developed by Google and one that’s strongly tied to this company’s services.

iPhone Sales Higher Than Anticipated. Crossing 7 Million in 4th Q

According to an article on AppleInsider the Cupertino-based firm is well on its way to exceeding its own expectations for 10 million iPhones in the year 2008. Using data from operating systems online from Net Applications OS Marketshare and from IMEI tracking from Mac Observerâ€™s, it is estimated that Apple has sold between 7 to 7.5 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of this year with the debut of the iPhone 3G, much higher than the 4 million analysts had anticipated.

In addition, in the months leading to the sales of the iPhone 3G, the first generation iPhone accounted for 16 bps of Net Applications OS marketshare, with an estimated number of 6 million units sold. By the end of September, Net Applications OS registered the iPhone with 32 bps. Extrapolation puts the iPhone at 12 million units. LG makes some very nice high end mobile phones and is pushing the limits with their new full touchscreen 8 megapixelÂ LG-KC910 (aka Renoir)device that goes on sale in early October in Europe.
