Why Bing Sucks. Top 5 Reasons.

Tuesday, June 02nd, 2009 |  #Tags: , , ,

featuredFor the past several days I’ve been using Microsoft’s new Bing search engine in tandem with Google to compare the results without sacrificing my previous experience.  The main reason why I did this was because I’d like to see viable competition to Google in the search engine space — plus I just like to try new things. After using Bing for several days, I think I’ll probably be going back to Google. I’m still going to give Bing a couple more days but so far the Cons of using Bing outweigh the Pros.

As I see it, following are the positives and negatives of Bing.

UPDATE: Some basic searches on BING just don’t work
“Was Einstein married?”
“What did Benjamin Franklin invent?”
“What is the top selling album of all time?”

Try them in Bing vs. Google. then you will know How bad is the “Decision engine”.

Pros

  1. There are good addons like travel and local results.
  2. The fact that Bing starts playing video thumbnails when you mouse over them in search results is super slick. This really helps in finding the video content that you are most interested in.
  3. I really love image search on Bing. More specifically, I think the results are generally good and I love that I don’t have to page — that Bing incorporated live.com’s endless scrolling of search results.

Cons

  1. The technical search results like “binomial theorem” will never endup in what you were actually looking for. It might end up in the history, stories ont hat topic which you as end-user will never bother about, that sucks!
  2. (UPDATE: Bing fixes this.) The biggest negative to me so far is the fact that Bing buries news search off the main page. I do many news queries every single day. Frequently I’ll be searching for something via Google and click on Google News. The fact that Bing makes you click on “more” to get to news search frankly flabbergasts me. This seems so basic that I honestly can’t believe someone at MSFT could not figure this one out. Instead of getting “news” search on the main page you get Shopping, MSN and Windows Live. How is it that MSFT has room for those search items but not “news?”
  3. I’m not entirely happy with the search results. A case in point. Earlier today I was trying to find Microsoft’s Bing Blog so that I could leave some of these comments there. So I did a search on Bing for “Bing Blog” Microsoft. What comes up? Lots of less than relevant stuff, but anything but the actual Microsoft Bing Blog. What I was looking for. By contrast, I do a search for “Bing Blog” Microsoft on Google, I actually can find the Bing Blog in the first page search results.
It also feels to me like Google consistently has Wikipedia entries higher up the search results list than Bing. I might be wrong on that, it’s just the impression that I got after doing several searches. Frequently Wikipedia contains the most relevant info on a search subject and I like seeing them displayed more prominently.
  4. The Bing stuff feels sluggish to me. Several times when I tried to load the Bing Blog (and most frustrating after I typed a lengthy comment) the page wouldn’t load as fast as google does. It seems to be hanging on “transferring data from analytics.r.msn.com” and so the community experience has not been good.
  5. Microsoft only lets you set your settings preferences to allow 50 results per page during searches. (Google by contrast allows you 100 items per search on a page.) Paging sucks and the less that I have to do of it, the better.
  6. Microsoft Maps need a ton of work. I use Google Maps a lot, mostly to set up maps of things that I want to photograph in various cities. MSFT seems to have a similar way to build your own maps using Bing Maps. They call them collections. I started making a “collection” of neon signs in San Francisco that I still need to shoot, but was really put off that my “collections” list is a huge box that blocks about 40% of my map view (you can’t drag this menu any place but directly over your map). With Google your saved locations sit in a column on the left side of the page and doesn’t block your map view.
  7. Result relevance was never as good as Google. First 2-3 results were tolerable, following were very vague.

Given that I use Map Search so much and that Map Search feels so clunky with Microsoft, this is probably one more reason why I’d want to go back to Google.

I’m going to keep trying Bing for the next few days to see if things improve. But most likely I’ll be going back to Google as I doubt that they can improve any of the above negatives very quickly. And In case, I’m satisfied with some results out of Bing, I might use it occasionally e.g. for image search.

Bing vs. Google.

If we Talk about Bing in particular taking over Google, that would be a fair joke from Microsoft. They dont have the skill and innovation to catch upto google. Even if they do, their capacity, processing & speed will never mach that of Google.

Bing in chinese language means “Disease”, truly a Brand Infection! Choice is yours.

i hate bing so much 4 some reason it is just like retarted it screws up everything!!!!):
    i like gogle betterrrrr(:
  • I love how your top 5 reasons Bing sucks is actually 7 reasons. Like it's hard to just pick five.

I did a bing search of why does bing suck, and the #6 answer was "why does it suck being gay?" The answer above that was about the game Halo 3.

Seriously Microsuck, step up your game or quit while you're ahead.
  • jmatt55
I have been using Bing for the last 4 months and I've about had it, I'm going back to Google. Bing is just inferior in so many ways.

First and foremost, for relevancy, there's no comparison. I would type search words into Bing and not find my answer. Pop over to Google, paste in same searchwords and find my answer in the first three listings. And most of the time it was, as you noted, nothing more difficult than hitting wikipedia first.

Bing's map functionality is a joke. After the first few attempts I didn't even bother trying anymore. Google maps is simply a billion percent better.

With Bing, if you type in a web search and then realize you meant an image search, you have to retype the search topic again. Wow, how fucking brain dead is that?

So while I'm not happy with Google's stranglehold on the internet, until MS gets its act together I'm back to Google.
  • Dae
Microsoft have always been crap and the legacy continues.
  • Bing is crap! I'm not a big one for marketing and names and all that stuff so I couldn't really care about the name "Bing" In fact, it sounds ok to me... But I don't have a gripe with the glitzy naming or promotion, what I care about is what's under the bonnet... And quite frankly, it is garbage!

Every website I create get's instantly indexed in both Google and Yahoo, yet never gets indexed in Bing until I shout and scream in their community forums and Brett Yount manually adds it!

How do they expect to be successful with this type of activity... And all the forum experts say "focus on building quality backlinks" - bullshit! I'm not asking to be number one...I'm asking to be indexed... a process that Yahoo and Google have no problem doing...I will focus on backlinks in my efforts to be at the top of the SERPs but that is secondary to just being listed!

Think about it, a small business owner who is focussing energy on a website (growing numbers of businesses focussing efforts online)...
I have a website and Bing doesn't index it...
    1. I'm never going to use Bing because it won't list my site
    2. I'm never going to tell anyone else to use Bing because they wont find me there

They're shooting themselves in the foot by making getting listed so difficult!

There is clearly a major issue with their index and it either can't keep up or is very buggy... What's even worse is I have seen in my logs that the MSN Bot has visited my site 5-6 times... And I still can't get listed... So in other words, it knows I exist, it has crawled my site, yet it still won't list me...

    Boo Bing!

Bing is exactly what it is in chinese!! A disease!!
It contaminated my Firefox Browser obligating me to use it!!
But I finaly found the cure for Bing. Now my Firefox is healthy again.
Bing is nothing more than a virus from microshit.
If anyone have that Bing bar disease on firefox please don't blame that on Firefox, its not firefox that is obligating people to use bing, Its Micro$oft that sent that virus.
  • SAM
Is it just me but every time i try to click a link or download somthing bing pops out and says no results or it dosnt exist can somone help me with this-email me a response-linksam9@sbcgloboal.net
  • desi
I hate bing's search also compared to google.
when searching with bing, a lot of unrelated junk I don't care for pops up. for example I searched for something about the superbowl on google and brought up the one we just had. I searched on bing and something about the 2004 superbowl came up as the first 5 results. whaat?
  • OverIt
Bing just does not compare to Google!!!
Whenever I type what i'm looking for into google I get it, with Bing the relevant topic doesn't even come up most of the time!!!
Bing does suck and I won't use it. Just get rid of it as no one I know uses it.
  • bing bounce
yeah, bing sucks. It would be nice to see someone edge google out of 99% market share but unfortunately bing is NOT that search engine in any way.
  • Erin
Bing results in a Thai India reporting system. I love the whole world aspect but you don't deliver what I'm asking for.

    Bing Sucks
  • jay
dude bing SUCKS!!! i went to download a screen sharing thing so i found a website and wen i hit download it went to bing and said could not be found really wtf i dont ever use bing it just popped up and i was on the screensharing site WTF WTF WTF WTF
  • pipe
does anybody at MS read this shit so they know how bad we hate bing? I have bing'ed "why does bing suck" and other variations of that query many times, and I was just hoping that somebody was tracking that.
  • Anonymoose
Couldn't agree with this article more. I decided to try Bing for a month when it came out and I could only make it through two weeks before changing my default search engine back to Google. I found that the screen didn't even scroll smoothly when I was searching. I assume it had something to do with the endless search results thing, but it made it hard to track where I was on the page. And that was in Microsoft's own browser.

They should have never got rid of Ms. Dewey. The search results were horrible, but at least she was fun to watch. Bing Blows.
  • I agree with much of this post. Bing has been a running gag literally for awhile now. Its even worse for webmasters, a visit to the Bing community blog shows hundreds of webmasters asking why their site or blog won't get indexed, and the answers to those questions leave a lot to be desired. It almost seems the Bing folks do not have a clue at all. There is no way on earth Bing will have a prayer of truly competing with Google the way it is right now.

Bing to me is the garbage Windows Live Search with a new interface that really isn't all that pretty at all. I think a better decision could be made with Google or even Yahoo for that matter. Atleast Yahoo searches are actually relevant most of the time. Yahoo isn't as good as Google, however Yahoo is probably Google's closest real competitor.
  • johnny wonny
and besides that, the name "bing" is amazingly stupid and screwy
  • Jerelle
Bing sucks because they do not give good answers for the thing that you type into the search engine. They also suck because they are a very crappy search engine.

    P.s Google is better
  • omer
Bing does not correct misspelled words. how ancient is that?
  • 10 years? or may be 20 ? nah 50!
Apple invented spellcheck 25 yrs ago :D
  • ggggcarr
I have to agree !!!!! the worst search engine on the web.
  • al
i also am not impressed with bing, google has it hand down
  • Reddog
Bing is the worst, Every time I search for whatever I am looking for, I get redirected three times before getting the website I clicked on, SO FRUSTRATING. Junk as far as I am concerned
  • to author: You really don't know how to use search engines, do you? You don't even know what does keyword mean! Search engine is NOT a dude, you can talk to. Use of question mark in search query? ROFL
  • jperez45
And that's when the true "SEARCH ENGINE" enter in the game, regular people don't have to learn meta tags or search hacks to get what they want, Live-search or bing is not so good even with basic stuff (at least if you don't get the exact term you want you get the most popular which could be linked to what you want), for me it's like a treat to make people fill relevance search tendencies for marketing databases, and judging by the way microsoft is incorporating (or buying) content for this engine i feel like they're crafting a B2B platform (...and later we'll see microsoft opening their own MAmazone or ME-Bay).

I can get a higher probability in google with misspelled or unknown therms than bing or even altavista (for power searching i still use metacrawler), these loosely search technique is important because the language is evolving (or crapping, anyway the language is changing) because the marketing campaigns keeps making horrible word jokes popular and the chats are not helping with it neither (u know the kind off wrdz the kidz luv 2 say, lol, etc), so i can get the corrected version from google for the search "Criztoval colo" to get "Cristobal colón", maybe if microsoft uses their office ortogrpahic corrector, but that would sound malicious like microsoft marketing their own anti-virus or selling licensed partner's products as their own (it's just not ethical).
  • Bing is just Live Search aka MSN Search
  • bobm225
Bing is the sound it makes when if fails to find anything. I can only HOPE the some computer counting program is keeping track of how many people are unhappy with this P.O.S.
  • Soannoybing
I have to agree - Bing is a useless pile of steaming turd.
  • Anonymous
Google is great because it's a WHITE page with Google written on it. It is able to use a complex mathematical system of links and keywords to find what you type in. With Bing, you have some fancy picture homepage that is different every time and results that are the opposite of what you need! Ever heard "keep it simple?" Go Google!
  • reyyapoo
I hate Bing with a passion. It is just like a Leper to me. And I can't get rid of it. I prefer Google. It not onlt shows limited results but shows irrelevant results.
  • miss sassy
I knew a guy named Bink does that count?
  • bingsucks
I just think bing sucks!!! way to copy google i mean just because you came up with a more memorable name like bing and have a fact of the day does not mean you are better.
  • tomandlindaa
How do I block out Bing? It keeps coming up on standard MSN login? If it keeps up I'm just going to start using Google for may home page>
  • Google is king of search engines, they can keep trying but will fail like yahoo with the annoying links results, they just trying copycat google
  • bingsucksass
I agree, I try and try and bing just sucks!
  • C. Winters
I find this ironic: I typed in "Bing sucks" in bing and this was the first thing it came up with. I have to say, this was a winner search on their part.
  • jodoe
yeah bing is like an ADD child (or Meth head, i guess) it might start with the first couple responses correct but it wanders off into lala land quickly.
  • yahoo
ah man, I'm a yahoo employee and feel really sad about the yahoo microsoft deal now.

Tried Bing for a while, it does suck .................

I have a personal website that is at around position 4 for related key word search on both Google and yahoo search, I submitted my site to Bing, guess what? almost 1 month later my site is no where to be found on Bing.
  • sorcersstone
yo you people need to get a life are are you really debating on what search engine is better!?
  • Bill Gates
    Not even I like Bing!
  • lonnusmaximus
UPDATE: People who do searches like the follwing ones in Enblish sentences should go use AskJeeves or Ask.com....
“Was Einstein married?” (Google results = just 'Einstein Wife'
“What did Benjamin Franklin invent?” ('Ben Franklin Inventions')
“What is the top selling album of all time?” ('Top selling album all time')

This is a data search.... 'Was', 'What did', and 'What is the' water down your search on strong data collection sites like Google. Askjeeves is gone now, and part of Ask.com... which my mom thinks is a real search engine because you can type sentences in for a search and it kinda acts human or something... I don't know.

But you obviously don't know how to search enough to write an article about the pros and cons of 2 search engines, unless you are talking about search engines for my grandma.
  • jakea27
i agree, but when you click on the link named "Ben Franklin Inventions", you will still likely get a list of what Ben Franklin invented, which would answer the question. The same would also go for "Top selling album all time" and "Einstein Wife". And this doesn't seem to always work with bing.
  • floortom
I agree Bing other than the cool picture is useless. Der what are you guys doing there I used to know a guy named Bing? I think youv'e all been kicking it together perhaps.?
  • Maria
If you want an alterative to Bing or Google, the Ask.com search engine works well for me.
I have looked for something and Bing very often doesn't show the results for what I was looking for, or it comes back "not found" . As for Google Its just too big.
  • cindy
searching images with bing is the worst!!!!!!!!!!
  • The relevance is horrible, however, interface is great!
  • RandomBandit
When I do a search I find relevance to be more...well...relevant, than the "Oooh, pretty" factor. As long as the interface is manageable I can forgive quite a bit.

I want to get rid of Bing!
This invasive piece of doggy doo doo appeared on my screen one day
and I don't have the time or patience , nor a poop scooper to get rid of it.

It happened to me too!!! Bing is pretty much a virus from Microsoft They have chosen the perfect name for it: Bing (disease in chinese). Also its not the first time Micro$oft tries to obligate people to use their products, several years ago Micro$oft obligated a company to install Internet Explorer on their computers and got processed.

BING IS SHIT. HOW NON-SPECIFIC AND NON COMITTED CAN A SEARCH SITE BE. I MIGHT AS WELL JUST GO AND AS MY CAT WHAT I WHAT I WANT TO KNOW.
  • anjeanettemitchell
    OMG,

I so agree with what you are saying!
Everytime i try to look up information all i get are a few drips of it and even then its not what i am looking for. This Bing doesnt know me...AT ALL!! I want information...not some tad bit of someones thoughts..I want information..ALL OF IT! I dont want a few sites to pop up because those sites ARE NOT what im looking for...so then i spend hours on bing trying to find the EXACT word or words so that it gives me REAL results.
Bing sucks and thats a shame that people THINK a computer can TELL me what im looking for!!hahahahaha
It has no idea...its always WRONG!! And one or two sites is just plain SLACK. It makes me wonder if some pretty woman came up with an idea and the guys tongues were sticking out instead of their brains. Come on get a grip this sucks...did you people at microsoft even try this out before you sent this out????
If you did..you need a new group of thinkers.
  • joe62222
this must be an anti Microsoft site. First of all the title contains the word sucks so typical immature anti-ms title. Second the comments are clearly by people who didn't even try bing. The worst part was the actual article gives you searches to try. Did they really thing nobody was actualy going to try them. I did all of them and the results for Google and Bing are almost identical ... get a life MS haters.
  • hey N00b, give us 1 good reason where Bing is better than Google!

This is NOT Microsoft Hatred site. This is the same site that Praises Windows 7 like anything http://www.taranfx.com/blog/tag/windows-7
In fact started several series that support windows 7.
    Go and get some life.

I tried Bing for the first time today. I wasn't just unimpressed,I was down right annoyed.

I hate pop-ups of any kind and bing is full of em. Not your average "buy this" pop-ups but stupid "informational" pop-ups.

If I wanted to know about the mating habits of eagles,I would search for that. Bing forces it upon you with a photo homepage and clicky "info" boxes that spawn "info" pop-ups.

I want to hit puppies now. Back to Google for me.

I'm glad that everyone else thinks that bing sucks. I wanted to like it, I tried to like it, but its results just don't make any sense. WAIT A MINUTE!!! I FIGURED OUT WHAT'S WRONG.

We are comparing Bing to Google. Google is a "search engine" and Bing is a "decision engine." When we use Google, we expect, and receive, search results. Bing gives decision results. Just like all of Microsoft's other products, Bing makes the "decision" of what we can do with our computers. Bing is so innovative that it has blown our minds and we aren't smart enough to interpret its results ;)

I have some important documents to print on my hotmail, and i keep redirected to this shitty search engine. Does anybody know how to get rid of this BInGshit?
  • Kat
Bing is absolutely the WORST search engine I have EVER tried. YES, I tried Bing MANY times before voicing my opinion. This search engine is useless. It offers no proper information for anything that I have searched for, or needed. Bing must die...it's wretched, horrible, useless, crappy, and other explatives that I(as a decent human being) do not use...but you can bet that I am THINKING them...GET RID OF BING!
  • There is nothing subjective about my assessment of Bing. Try searching for www.gardenofpoetry.com in Bing, Google, Yahoo, and any other random search engine. Bing can’t even find specific URL. What a complete joke!
  • I use search engines when I want to find specific information on the Internet. What good is a search engine that doesn’t do that? Put all of the lovely graphics you wish to on Bing’s face, it is still a complete turkey. Bing is about as useful to me in my search for cyber information as a dumb blonde with a nice rack…well, actually, not even that useful.

I HATE BING it is one of the WORST search engines I have ever used. It pops up everywhere and is impossible to remove unless you just disable EVERYTHING it is attached to. Some how it just showed up one day on my computer and it is like a wart to remove the only way to get rid of this horrid useless unwanted growth is cut it out- without mercy.

Did you guys actually try Bing before making this post and the comments?

I just did a search under the Video portion of Bing for a comedian named Louis Black, and on the first page, I got everything BUT Louis Black. I got Louis Armstrong, Farrakhon, Theroux, Black history month, even an Angus Young video (Black Ice Tour)

I did the same search under Google, and got nothing But the Comedian Louis Black. BING SUCKS.
  • Edward
You people are EXTREMELY biased against Microsoft! Bing is not that bad! It's not worse than Google, it's not better than Google.. it's exactly the same!
For instance, one of you said put in "linux" in the search and Microsoft comes up the boxes below for search suggestions saying "linux microsoft, linux windows" etc. That is not true! You are just saying that for shits and giggles. I get everything to come up for linux including command lines, downloads, and the different versions of linux.

You people are hating on Bing simply because it's made by Microsoft and you have no idea how a search engine functions or operates behind the scenes. I also strongly agree with the person who wrote this blog post as well. 100+ search results on a page of Google when only the first 5 are really worth clicking on? You must be using Google for practical searches, but when I search for programming error codes and support, I get jack shit for search results.
  • jon doe
after reading almost every single reply i am glad that i HAVE NOT even went to bing.com, people are saying that it takes over as your defualt search engine! obviously they know that nobody in there right mind would use it so they have to force it on us. also the commercials are just the worst thing i have ever seen. i seriously get in a rage and have to turn the channel every time i see these on tv. why cant they just say "try our new search" and then show bing at the end? why do they have to be so f'ing annoying to the point where you want to throw something through your tv? i hope it all goes under and off the net and tv.
  • I have two stage names... abutterflyloves and kimmysharinglight. Google gets me results from 10,000 + to 100,000. Last I checked Bing I think I was up to 200. Bing does nothing for the searcher or the searchee.

I continually send them feedback. But I doubt they check it.

I just go immediately to Google. If Google and MSN merge, of course we're immediately screwed. They might keep BING, the worst search engine of all time. BING was developed by caphuchin monkeys caged with old World Book encyclopedias. There's no other explanation for a system this bad. Well, perhaps the developers are bereft of logic and any form of education. Uh, BING developers. Do you know what a BOOK is? Please consult your monkeys.

  • Bing is to search engines what Vista is to operating systems. They look pretty but are slow to work, intrusive and use up resources. Bing's a slug. Google must be laughing their pants off. Yahoo are insane for getting involved with bing, bye bye Yahoo!
  • J P
I find that Bing is actually pretty decent. There are a few problems as you mentioned, but it has a lot of advantages over Google too. http://www.ehow.com/how_5244722_compare-bing-vs... gives a good comparison of Bing vs Google. The point is that each has their own advantages and disadvantages.
  • mkp
    BING SUCKS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD!!!!
  • Exceptional piece, although I do not agree totally with the severity of off-centered results. I think we need to wait a bit before Bing reaches it's best. But, as you said, it still has some advantages in Image search.

the only thing worse than using "bing" to search for something is wathcing one of the commercials. just plain terrible. wheres seinfeld when u need him?

Well, if you're using Mozilla Firefox, get this app called "Autopager" it loads the second page on the bottom of the firt one. So switching pages wouldn't be as big of a deal.

Bing absolutely sucks too much for words to describe. Here's my big cosmic question. For all the money it takes to work up the big ad campaign, can't they hire some people who really know how to create a search engine? I have to keep f'ing bing as my default b/c of company policy, so now I have to use bing to get to google to do a search that will find me what I want. Wastes my time.
  • @John
Nah, It wasn't developed in India, here is the real secret http://www.taranfx.com/blog/?p=1072
It was a big challenge for MS.
  • John
I tried to use bing, but it said I need to create a Live ID. I don't what that is
  • john
Binnnnnnnnng!!!! Bind ding dong blinka linka ling long cluck cluck..
  • john
Bing was developed by Microsoft in India. I won't use it. Bing is a$s.
  • Bing is just absolutely terrible... Search results are not relevant, takes me to random places, and annoying stuff like that.....
You cannot even compare it to google
There is no comparison between the two
    Just saying...
  • Those commercials are as annoying as fuk-all.
  • Jer
Ever since Bing started, I've absolutely HATED it. The results have little to no relevance, the links hardly ever work, and lately when I click on a link, the first couple of times, it takes me to a completely random page, nothing to do with the search! (i.e. Search for Elder Scrolls 5, link leads to a work-from-home outfit). I've been searching from my browser for years, and want to keep doing so, so I tried to change my Internet Search Provider, only to find out that, mysteriously, the only one that works when I try to use it is Bing! Google, Yahoo, Ask, even crappy AOL search all give me "a file could not be downloaded" error messages. Anybody else think MS is sabotaging the competition? I mean, who else controls the IE file downloading?
  • TERRY CARSON
YOUR COMMENTS ARE VERY THOUGHT OUT AND LOGICAL. BUT I THINK THE THING THAT PISSES ME OFF IS THAT BING DOES EXACTLY WHAT ITS COMMERCIALS MAKE FUN OF. USELESS, IRRELEVANT INFORMATION. HOW OUT OF TOUCH IS MICROSOFT? THEY'VE BECOME IBM.
  • Dixie N
Followed your lead, tried "who invented the lightbulb" on both.

Not sure either had an ideal list of relevant results, but Bing really annoyed me by first showing an ad for a lightbulb superstore at the top (distracting, and something not found on Google), and the second thing I saw was a result from Microsoft's own Encarta. Sorry, but Encarta is so 1996...who TF uses Encarta in 2009?

Also saw some weird results elsewhere like QOOP photo calendar images giving me high-relevance image search results when I can't image browsing patterns support this, making me believe QOOP has some deal with Microsoft to get their product images high in the search results. This leads to a search engine without any integrity.
  • R Alescio
I haven't seen this mentioned - 50% of the time, when I select a search result, I'm redirected past my destination to some ads or yet another set of choices. This is the lousiest experience on the web and a almost total waste of my time and Microsoft's remaining reputation.
  • CJ
Bing's results suck, I can't find any of the website I enjoy as easily as I find through Google. Any why does Bing look just like Google? They need to stop copying Google and Apple and offer a genuine Microsoft experience.
  • @Fortune cookie
    Amazing scan dude.
Where did u get tha. You nailed it!
  • MIke C in NM
My new goal is to make google the most popular searched for site on bing!
  • Bing in chinese language means “Disease”... No really I got it in a fortune cookie!!!

Look here I scanned and uploaded it! http://www.noki.me/images/bing-disease.jpg
  • Michelle
Bing could not find my website when I directly typed in the name of the website which is my first and last name .com. Google Can.
  • adfadf
Whoever said microsoft search was around longer than google.
    Your Wrong.
Google was the first search engine ever
when it was the index system for the first ten webpages ever built.
  • jperez45
Before google there were metacrawler, altavista (by ibm and digital), etc.
One of thwe firsts search engine was archie for archive search.
    The golden age of PERL
  • I am going to agree that "bing" is a piece of sh[t
  • John Dilon
Just the little things about BING SUCK BIG. Bing sucks. If it is not broke don't fix it. It is always a shame when the smart poeple think they are smarter.
  • Paul
because of the wide range of characters and tones, "bing" can mean many things in Chinese, so that's not really a valid point here.
  • Math Head
I searched for bing.com sucks on bing. this page as the 5th or 6th result. the first being "Bing beats Yahoo!"

Thanks Bing for the extremely relevant first result.
  • ILikeSocks
    Why, why god whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

    i like socks ><
  • Mare
Sorry to say it, but Bing does suck. Someone said, it does not do your thinking for you, so don't ask questions. It is suppose to be a decision engine right? So why not ask a question.

Want a simple test? Just type into both "How tall is Jimmy Stewart". The most relevant answers come from the Google search.

Also, Bing does set Microsoft related issues at the top. When you search for Google, it gives you related sites, and list Bing first. Now, that's marketing.

Bing is used to sell Microsoft and that's just plain wrong.

It did have some features I liked. Like the side bar. Its cool. But, I will never use it again. Sorry Microsoft, it just plain sucks as a search engine and does a poorer job as a decision engine, which is how you are marketing it.
  • Hype
The reason why bing is suddenly about 17% of the searches done is because on internet explorer it automaticly puts bing to the up-right-searchbar. And I think if you use firefox and install, for example msn messenger it somewhere says that "Bing will be put as your default search engine" But you can change the default search like this: Look to the right of the search bar, there should be a blue thing (Dont know the english word, sorry) and on the right from that should be an arrow pointing down. Click it and then click "Search other services" (i dont know how it is in english because for me its in finnish) then on the site what it opens just click google and put on the tic that says "Put this as my default search" I hope someone understands this and i really hope this helped somebody. : )
  • Dan
It seems the only sites that BING shows are the ones that pay microsoft to advertise. Do a search for "computer repair, city, state" on bing and google and compare the results. You'll get geeksquad and maybe 2 others on top and very few others with BING, GOOGLE gives you may more to choose from: every computer repair shop that is close by.

    Peace Out!
  • googler
    for random kicks:

bing certainly has more precise 'boob' images than google.
Type that into google, and you still have other stuff thrown in image results.
  • cigzig
For all you people hating on bing you should know more about it before you do. It's not google you idiots. It is another alternative to organize searches better than google. It filters. if you don't like that use google! Also in a search engine you don't type in questions like above. Type in Einstein or better yet use wikipedia. You still have a brain you know, search engines aren't thinking for you are they? I criticize Microsoft products just as much as the next guy but you have to give them a chance. Mac users stay away anything Microsoft it is just over your head anyway.
  • Bing sucks. This is no big surprise. Everything from Microsoft sucks.
  • Muriel
Bing sucks! You never pull up half of what Google does. I have tried putting the same thing in Bing that I do in Google, and Bing doesnt pull half the stuff Google does! Bottom line...Bing is a huge waste of time!
  • Peterm
Bing has one "Feature" that for me makes it not usable.
I have been using the side by side add in on ff, and it shows the list of both.
This feature is the DREADED localization feature. I do a lot of traveling and it always tries to find out where I am to find localized results. I don't need local results, I am planning trips and I need the NON local results. Try setting preferences, and you CAN set to lots of different countries, but you cannot set this to NO localization.
Let's kill localization on the web this is horific for travelers and in the and bad for everybody else!
  • Tori
    I try:
"google sucks big time when comapred to bing is this correct or wrong give me some examples for this question"

  • phantomsax
I hate the fact that Bing took over as my default search provider in IE8. I hate IE8 enough as it is without Bing. I had never bothered to change it from Windows Live Search, but as soon as they switched to Bing, and I saw the low grade results, I immediately looked up how to change the default search provider. Nice try, bad move Microsoft.
  • @dan
“Wikipedia contains the most relevant info…”
when Google puts the search result of wikipedia at top, its most relevant. As wikip gives inside-out of the topic, it is able to be known as the "best result", coz user finds at-least something concrete to proceed further. wen user gets the building blocks, hes free to go deeper with better keywords for search.
  • Chuck
As usual, Microsoft seems to be catering to grandmothers, soccer moms, and kids. Everything they have designed since XP is just too "cute". For those of us who use our computers for serious work, Microsoft has become a pain in the ass.
  • dan
This was shaping up to be a good review. My initial reaction to bing is similar. I use Yahoo and won't be changing. However, this comment blew your credibility, "Wikipedia contains the most relevant info..." Wikipedia is cool. Wikipedia is fun. Wikipedia has nice information. But Wikipedia IS NOT relevant when it comes to information. Guess you missed the article in Yahoo News about the faux quotes from the dead.
  • jordan
welll done. I think another pro for Bing is the fact that they allow porn on their video searches. Google video doesn't really do that and I'd much rather view and be directly linked to pornagraphic videos through a large trustworthy search engine rather than view it through sites trying to promote the sale of full length videos to me.
  • zzz
This is by far the least intelligent search engine I have ever encountered. I use the web for research and I cannot use this product. Often, the search results do not remotely resemble my query.

Microsoft with their bullshit PC commercials, their bullshit Windows commercials, and now with their triply annoying Bing commercials have become experts at touting their subpar to worthless to annoyingly incompetent products. Considering just how long they have been in the search engine arena, it's shocking just how much they suck at it still. Bing sucks, PC sucks, Windows, especially Vistas, suck. When will they give up?
  • MiniMe
Two more things to add to the list:

    1. No spellcheck on the main page - that is annoying
  • I own a web site - the biggest of its kind, and Bing has us on like - page 43. Its ridiculous. Its like we are completely irrelevant, yet we are one of the 3 biggest sites on the web for our topic. Google has aptly had us on page 1 or 2 for the last 9 years. Google still reigns in the department of quality search results. I know im biased, but Im also practical. Ive seen the other sites on our topic, and nothing compares. Im going to agree with this blog. Bing sucks.
  • Martin Joseph Bobcek
Okay, listen. I stopped reading your incoherent response once I saw number two which reads "The biggest negative to me so far." In case you didn't know, number two would not be the biggest. The biggest implies that you are referring to the utmost in weight. If it is truly the biggest it most likely would have been number one... yes? You have failed.
  • neko
on a plus note, you were the first hit on Bing when I typed in "Bing Sucks." :)

I'm a service desk analyst for Americas largest travel insurer, having used bing for the past week, I have to say I am not impressed. Google gives much more pertenant results and is still hade and shoulders above bing . Even bings name sucks, I never associate the word "bing" with succes.
  • Guys, I observed something,
Microsoft is closely looking at this Blog. All the things that i have been mentioning in the blog, have been being fixed by Bing eventually!

so for all u Bing fans, put ur wishlist here!
  • Nathan
I tried your three examples of bad bing searches. All three of them had the answer in the first result. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong? I don't see Bing sucking at all here...
  • Try typing a blog address or a name of a blog and see what you get. Bing can't find my blog, whereas Google has no problem with it. The results Bing produced were where my blog is mentioned on the Internet - but never did it lead you to my blog - not in 10 pages - even when I typed the actual address in the search. It's MSN search repackaged. Google is better and moving into the social aspect of the Internet - leaps ahead of BING. Bing Bang Bom.
  • GL
Stupid name, stupid company that for the past 20 years doesn't listen. 2009 - software arrogance is at an all-time high, along with incessant re-inventing-of-the-wheel by Micro$oft, google and every other software "company". It's annoying, there's not one software company that understands what the word familiarity means and can leave a user interface alone for more than nine months at a stretch. The billions that Bill F. Gates has in his pocket was supposed to be spent on SOFTWARE TESTING. Software is not supposed to be "new", it's supposed to BE RELIABLE.
  • bing
    I tried this -

Update: Looks like the added News to the main page.
  • I agree with this post...bing sucks. Where is the new search experience that this was hyped up to be?

I found this annoying and a waste of time, plus I am used to layout of google searches...I know where everything is and I like it that way. I am not switching. Microsoft definetely has the resources, they could have done something truly innovative here...booo!
  • Dan
For me, back to Yahoo. I prefer Google, but I like how Yahoo clears your data from their servers quicker.

Bing, tried it, and don't like any of it. The thumbnail previews on videos being the best bit, yet I generally am always doing something and hoving my cursor back off the video stops the preview. I prefer loading the full thing anyway.

As for all the paging, there is a great Firefox addon called AutoPager which will load the next page of results for just about any site under your current page, very good.

There is also a Greasemonkey script that does this which I used to use.

So paging really should'nt be a problem - even if you are stuck with Internet explorer you could use I.E Pro to install the script.
  • crod76
Search for "bing" on bing and google, and google will find it sooner, now that is lame, as they say in the hood "wassup wit dat"
  • The only thing I can say that every one isn't is; I told you so... http://denzuko.wordpress.com/2009/06/01/will-mi... and
    http://denzuko.wordpress.com/2008/04/18/the-dig...

In all truths, MSFT has died eons ago with the anti-trust wars and is only hanging around because of Vendor licenses, Xbox Licensed Sales, Advertising revenue from PPC and the like.

Really think of it; when was it that you ever really went to the store and bought a copy of Windows, Office, and the like? Never!!! it came with the over priced PC you bought and want to chuck out the window because it stopped working.

Bing is just another example of MSFT's failure to launch something worth wild and leading standards compliant.

    Cheers,

Try to search google in bing.com, you can see a text box that allows to search in using google. Microsoft is so generous.

    But, search bing in google....WTF.....

So which search engine is more generous...
  • Matt
I don't think that there are only 2 pros that you can easily see. I don't think only videos and images are kinda cool in that search engine.

    1. You get a history of what you're searching right in the left menu.

    2. The categorization they use, seems quite useful for me.

    3. There is also a preview of the content before you go click on it.

Again, this 3 aspects i just listed are really impressive. A few things to take in consideration besides "images and videos"
  • I found bling pretty intresting..

It is usually ppl like the comfort of what they already have and avoid exploring in the dark.. I am using bling for couple of days and I think it only needs acceptance..

Just by using a search engine for 2 days we can't judge anything... Atleast we need to use the search engine for a month or longer..

Why we have to compare everything with google ?? Yes they set the standards on the web, but we should also let other search engines evolve.. Lets give Bing a fare chance..
  • comctrl6
    Go Bing yourselves!
  • M$ is better work on media player, in the web Google is on top!
  • Joe
Microsoft's insane obsession with Google has brought us Bing. It's too bad they couldn't have focused that same energy on making a decent OS. While Apple and Linux and Ubuntu slowly continue to gain market share, Microsoft gives us Bing.

We're witnessing history here... the slow and subtle decline of a once mighty software giant.
  • Matt
This is another review of Bing.. I found it an interesting read anyway

Microsoft is doing their monopoly thing again, trying to oppress its competitors by misleading its users. Just go to bing and in the search box type 'linux' but don't submit it. Bing gives you a dropdown box that looks like this:

    linux
    linux windows
    linux microsoft
    linux vista

I would never use a search engine that blatantly tries to force its corporate self on its users. That's brainwashing mind rape.
  • joe62222
I just tried what you suggested and none of those were in the drop-down. I got things like Linux distros, linux commands. Maybe you should get a grip on your hatred.

What a big mistake this has been for Microsoft. I have spent a few hours testing Bing and it totally sucks, most of the results are not relevant. I think Microsoft ought to revert back to Live Search which was not the best but way way better than Bing. I think they ought to follow on Google's steps and start getting into the local idea. They really messed up this time
  • Sped
Try searching bing sucks on both google and bing. Guess which gives you better results?
  • steve
seriously dude, did they screw this up?
I was expecting a good search/decision engine this time
  • scott
Microsoft know the basics, they have been doing search for quite a bit longer than google. But man did they seem to screw this one up. I used to use Live search and even MSN search all the time as well as google (whichever is the browser default). I used to find the results from either search to be good, pulling up relavent information that I am looking for. But man, bing just plain sucks. I after doing a search on bing a seem to have to try it in google just to get a set of relavent results. I myself will give it a littel bit more time but I think in the end I am going to actually have to chenge the default search in IE.

I don't see how they wouldn't have just leveraged the live search engine when creating bing. But it seems they didn't because the result seem to suck.
  • Tzen
microsoft need to learn basics before they start getting into search business
